Who makes the best M4?

Post by fireranger »

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on who makes the best M4 in the civilian marketplace. I have been waiting for the ban to sunset and now I'm ready for a new toy. I've thought about Bushmaster, Rock River, and Olympic. Any help would be appreciated.

I have used the Bushmaster AR-15 in a work and training environment and have had no problems with it - good price, good product. I imagine the quality of the M4 would be close to, if not identical to, the AR-15.

Colt, Bushmaster, FN. Wilson Combat also has high quality M4's but they are very, very pricey.

I have a buddy who has a bushmaster who recently came down for a visit. We were at the range and hadn't put but about 150 rounds through it and prior to that it hadn't had that many since he just got it shortly before hand. Well I had been firing it and all the sudden the trigger pull changes. At first it seemed like it didn't want to fire then with quite a bit more pressure it fires a quick pop-pop 2 round burst. I was kind of taken back thinking damn that was too quick. So I tried it again and it seemed like the pull had an extra 5 pounds added. Sure enough a another pop-pop 2 round burst. I place it on safe drop the mag and check everything out and it all looks good to go. I ask my bud to fire it and sure enough another 2 round burst then I ask about the trigger pull and he confirms that it is quite a bit heavier than normal. While a 2 round burst might be nice, the fact that the trigger pull is all fucked up and that it was a malfunction is kind of fucked up. Well after he got back home he called bushmaster and they said they would repair it but I never found out the cause. Well that is my only dealings with a bushmaster.

Ranger Mitch,

I've got a Bushmaster XM15 20" HBAR that has had about 1500rds through it with zero malfs. I did replace the trigger system with the JP Enterprises speed hammer and adjustable trigger.

It sounds like your friend may have a hammer/disconnector engagement problem or the disconnector spring is broken and interfering with the operation.

Does your friend have a stock strigger or one of the National Match 2 stage triggers?

To my knowledge, century arms doesn't "make" anything bro...they just import/export, though I could be wrong...definitely never heard of them making an M-4.

Did you guys strip the lower? And if so what did the hammer and sear lock up look like? Full engagement, partial, or where the hammer and sear deformed?
After it had the malfunction we just put it up and pulled out his Rem 700 and moved over to the long gun portion of the range and played with that. We said once we got back to the house we were going to check it out but a few dozen beers later and you know how that ends up. He left the next day so I don't know what happened with it. I'll get in touch with him and see what he found out. I had forgotten all about it until I read this post.
