Looking for advice on freeze-dried meals for long ops

Post by Ross9 »

Hi all,

I’m gearing up for some extended trips out in the sticks and thinking about getting some freeze dried food to keep me going. I know plenty here have plenty of field experience, so I’d appreciate your thoughts on these meals, do they really hold up in terms of nutrition and taste? Any brands or specific dishes you’d recommend?
Also, I’m keen on stuff with a decent shelf life, as I want to stash some away for emergencies too. How practical are these meals when you’re out on the go? I get that you need hot water, but any tips or tricks to make it easier or more reliable would be ace.
Cheers in advance for any advice or personal experience you can share!

Stay safe.

I’ve used freeze-dried meals on a few trips and they’re honestly pretty solid. Light, easy to carry, and they do the job when you’re out there. Taste depends on the brand and the meal, some are great, some are just “okay”, but when you’re hungry they usually hit the spot.
They’re practical as long as you can boil water. I usually eat straight from the pouch, less mess. Shelf life is a big plus too — good option for emergency storage.

Try a few different meals before committing and see what you like. Adding a bit of hot sauce or olive oil helps a lot.

Hope that helps.
