Introduction - Riley

Post by RO1920 »

Hello Rangers,

My name is Riley, I am 24 years old and am set to ship 21 Aug 2017 with an 11x contract. Long story short, I was not able to pick up an Option 40 due to technically being prior service and having a medical waiver from my discharge from the Navy. I was in the with an SO contract, and during one of the dive special physicals the doc found something he thought was an issue with my knee and I was given the option to go to the fleet or discharge, so I was discharged with an ELS. Pissed at the situation I went directly to a knee specialist when I got home that determined the Navy doc got it wrong with my knee, there was no structural issues what so ever (all that paperwork from the specialist was submitted when we filed paperwork with the Army).

I want to serve in the highest capacity that I can, and for myself I cant think of anything better than the 75th Ranger Regiment. I exhausted all my options with trying to obtain an option 40 contract but everything was shot down and was told I would just have to take an 11x and hopefully obtain a RASP slot at Basic. Since it is my only option that is what I am doing and am going to work as hard as humanly possible and do whatever it takes to pick up a RASP slot (have read many "letters from school" threads and seen this is somewhat common). Anyways, I am fired up to get started and work my butt off to get to where I want to be. If any of you Rangers have any info or tips to better my chances of picking up a RASP slot that would be greatly appreciated! Thank you Rangers for your time and insight.

Hey Riley,

Welcome to the site. There is a surreal amount of info here. You are not the first person to come here with no Opt 40. Some got the chance to serve. Some did not.

The recruiting team used to come out and ask for volunteers. They did it at my OSUT and when I went to Jump school (2003). They also used to have a LNO at Jump school for guys to go volunteer to. I have no idea if they still do any of this. I can imagine they may still look for some volunteers out of OSUT classes but they probably focus on low density MOS types... as in, not infantry.

Don't let that discourage you. You have your 11X secured and that is an accomplishment. Keep your eyes and ears open. When the time is right ask your Drill Sergeants if they will recruit or come by or just state you want to volunteer. Not on the first day. Or second. Use your judgement. I volunteered when the recruiters came out but still received orders to go to Fort Campbell and the 101st. My Drill Sergeant had to square my paperwork away and ensure I went to Jump school and RIP...

And if all fails, go serve in the Army. The Army needs exceptional people just as bad as Regiment does. Even if you only stay for a couple years. Lots of different advice for if/when that comes about... Stick around and if you get to that point we can chat about it.
