First Chilean Soldier to earn a Ranger tab

Post by Jim »

The June 20 graduation of Ranger School Class 6-14 marked an historic occasion, as for the first time, a Chilean soldier was among the Rangers earning their Ranger tab.

Chilean 1st Lt. Hernan Oyanguren, who serves as a platoon leader for Chile's Special Operations Brigade, said after the ceremony he was still surprised to be the first from his country to complete Ranger School.

Didn't we have one of the boys pass a Chilean "nut buster" course recently?

Good on this guy. If I remember correctly their equivalent course makes Ranger School kinda pale in comparison.

We have recently had some attend Lancero in Columbia and Kaibil in Guatamala. I know several US soldiers who have attended the Chilean high altitude training course, which is about 10 12 weeks long.

There was a Venezuelan LT in my class who spoke of a Lanceros in his army, claiming it was as difficult or more so than RS. (No, his name wasn't Chavez, as has been asked too many times)

Many years back I managed to get into an Italian Military climbing course along with 2 other American Soldiers. While enrolled, we became pretty good friends with a pair of Chilean Mountain guys who were seconded to the Italian Alpini's for a year to attend the summer climbing and winter skiing courses. Pablo and Rodrigo were there names. They were some good dudes all around.
