Introduction- Matt

Post by NU2013 »

Hello Rangers,
My name is Matthew. I am 23 years young and I was directed towards this site by my wife after I enlisted as a 92Y(Unit Supply Specialist) with option 40. She loves to do research, and luckily, it was to my benefit. I will be shipping to Fort Benning for BCT soon and felt like I should learn more about the brotherhood of the Rangers. When I was in High School JROTC, I had an instructor who was an Airborne Ranger and he motivated me to the point where I wanted to exemplify his morals and his teachings.
While I am slotted for Airborne and RASP, my goal is also to commission as an officer. I attended Norwich University where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. As soon as I complete BCT, AIT, Airborne, and RASP, I plan on applying for OCS or Green to Gold. (If anyone has any advice on which choice is the better one, the information would be greatly appreciated.)

Welcome. My advice for what it's worth;

IF you make it to Regiment at all, don't go getting all ahead of yourself trying to be an officer. Absolutely fine if you want to go the O route, but, and this is a very important point, I absolutely guarantee you that you will be a better officer and leader if you do a few years enlisted in a Ranger Battalion first.

Get to know what it feels like to hump a 110lb ruck all day and night for days on end, then lay and crawl in the freezing cold mud on perimeter with no hot food or coffee, or being the junior guy in your squad that gets all the shit work and carries all the gear that the Spec4 Mafia bestows upon you as punishment for some minor infraction. Learn these things first, earn your way, experience the pain of being the lowest ranking man and get to know the thoughts of those around you.

Once you have lived that lifestyle, and want to then become an officer, go for it. You'll understand your NCO's and your enlisted mens needs and how to respect them and actually love them for the suffering that they endure and yet never complain about to you.

You'll have already been there and want to protect them more and won't just be worried about your next promotion. The schoolboy arrogance (college-ROTC-whatever) in you will be dead, and in it's place will be a damn fine leader. You will understand the absolute importance of your NCO's and how much they do and know and understand. Don't be one of those that just tell them what to do and then go back to an air-conditioned or heated shack to sleep while they still lay in the mud, hungry, cold and tired.

Young man, you have no idea how valuable this advice is. The best thing you could do at this point is save this and refer to it every week or so as you progress through your training.

Ranger Cams,
Thank you for your advice. I appreciate the encouragement and will do what I can to join the ranks of the Rangers. I understand what you mean when you speak of arrogant leaders. I have met some arrogant people who have commissioned as officers in each branch of the military. I hope to learn as much as I can from the Rangers, on this website and in the future.

You do not have much time left. Please memorize the Ranger Creed and start living your life by it. Take heed of what you have been told. Begin a letter in the schools thread and keep us updated on your progress. Never, never quit!
