Ranger Dog Handler
Rangers,
It's come to my attention that after searching for quite a bit on the site I didn't come across any information on Rangers that are dog handlers. I don't know much about it but I've always been interested in military working dogs, and I've watched some of those SOF combat videos and things like that on YouTube and I've seen that some of these guys are handling those dogs, whether they're MARSOC, Army ODA, or SEALs, or even other countries SOF like the Australian SASR and whatnot, I've always noticed a number of them with military working dogs. Since I am new to the site I was just wondering if anyone that is a member has been a Ranger dog handler or if anyone could give me some insight on the subject. I would most definitely want to be a part of that when I get into the Army, hopefully in the Rangers.

In you introduction thread, I explained the search feature. Did you try to answer this question using the search feature?

Re: Ranger Dog Handler
Roger Ranger Jim, I've used the search feature and searched for quite a bit, read a number of posts to see if they mentioned information on the subject and didn't come up with much, and I've searched the internet on the subject and didn't come up with much either, just people asking the same as I am. I may not have searched hard enough through the search feature of this site and if that is the case I will give it another go.

Actually Ranger Jim, I proved myself wrong, after a little more searching and using different key words I've found a topic already opened on this site pertaining to the subject. Should have dug that extra bit deeper before posting.

Re: Ranger Dog Handler
What I came up with was this. (Quoted from Ranger 42L5V's post)
"Dog handlers are now spread all around the Army. There are two MOSs which deal exclusively with dogs. They are 31B (Military Police) and 21B (Combat Engineer). MP dogs do drug searches, etc. Engineer dogs are mine and explosive dogs. Only those two MOSs do specific dog work. Even in these jobs, dog handler is a special skill, meaning not every MP or Engineer deals with dogs. There's an application process and sometimes, people have to reenlist for it.
The dog handlers that are spread amongst combat units are additional duty guys. Meaning that they are shooters who have been assigned a dog, much like they are assigned to be a radio guy, or a gunner, or an ammo bearer."
So since I am enlisting as an 11X option 40 I wouldn't have one of those dog specific MOSs in which case I would have to hope I get assigned a canine or take it to my chain of command and try to convince them to assign me a dog and let me assume that position

Now you know why I always point out this resource. I am not your parent, nor am I one of your teachers, I do not have to tolerate sloth. I want to help prepare you for service in the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Re: Ranger Dog Handler
Without violating OPSEC, 11 series are able to be canine handlers in some units. You won't walk into that outta RASP though.ARegularguy123 wrote:

Focus on the 5 meter target.

Roger Ranger Invictus. Have to get into the Regiment first before I can do anything more within it.
Re: Ranger Dog Handler
Interesting; there was a story in today's Parade magazine: "Honoring the Dogs of War."

Re: Ranger Dog Handler
Im gonna be nice and give you some help stud. Heed the 5m advice given to you and get in the unit. AFTER you show you're a contributing member to the organization i.e. have your tab and been a positive member of your element. After that moving over there might be an option...or it might not it all depends.ARegularguy123 wrote:Roger Ranger Invictus. Re: Ranger Dog Handler
Roger Ranger Edge and Ranger Jim, thanks for sharing that story, was a good read. I'm glad they are giving the canine service members more recognition. I had an idea of what dogs were capable of but they do a lot more than a lot of people would think.

Opportunities will present themselves when, and if, you prove yourself in the battalion and you take initiative. That's all you need to know at this point.
