Hello Rangers,
My name is Quan, I'm an MSII Cadet at the University of Houston. As of now I am uncontracted, but my plans are to attend LTC training at Fort Knox this summer, and contact afterwards at the start of my MSIII year.
My father was an ARVN paratrooper in Vietnam up until the end of the war. As far as I could remember, he kept me away from anything that had to do with violence. I wasn't allowed to play with toy guns, supersoakers, watch violent war movies etc. But he loved to tell me stories of when he was in Vietnam, and how proud he was of his maroon beret.
It was no shock that he was against the idea of my enlisting after high school. As all fathers do, he wanted the best for me and to him, that meant going to college. So I enrolled at UH and during that time I also became a Firefighter/EMT, a childhood dream of mine.
But there was one more childhood dream that I felt that I had to fulfill, and that was to one day earn a maroon beret of my own. Once again I approached my father with the idea of entering into the military, but this time as an officer. A former 1LT himself, he at first disapproved of the idea, but then strangely he became interested. It might have been due to the fact that at this point, he knew that I had already made my decision and that I have reached the level of adulthood that no longer requires his approval. Now he and I talk every week about what I've learned in ROTC thus far.
The amount of information on here is priceless, and it is my hope that one day, I can relieve you of your duty and provide advice and help to those whom will eventually replace me one day. Thank you for all that you do and thank you for your service to our country.
