Introduction- Marty
Hello Rangers,
My name is Martin although everyone calls me Marty.
I am currently looking at the Army as a potential career path that I could take with my work background and skill-set. I have my A.A.S. in Firefighting, I am certified as an EMT through the National Registry. I worked as a firefighter for 3 years. I was a municipal firefighter, until I changed and became an industrial firefighter. I was unhappy with the difference I was making and decided to move to strictly an Ambulance service which is where I currently work.
I have a co-worker on my shift who has been in the Army for 7 years. He started in the National Guard then made the switch to active duty. He served as an Army Medic in Iraq for 4 years, 1 of which was with a recon unit. I have been talking to him a lot and learning a lot about the different path's one can take. I feel, as does he, with my background, that being an Army Medic is ideal for me. I also have only ever been interested in the position of Medic with an Armed Forces branch. I have always been attracted to the creed and stigma associated with being a Ranger. I feel that with my personal history, work ethic, and desire to be elite at whatever I do, Army Rangers seemed to be the place to look.
About myself, I am 26 years old, I am very active physically, it has become a lifestyle of mine. I am no stranger to hard work. At the age of 19 I weighed 300 pounds, had no direction, and no real outlook on my future. I made the decision to start losing weight for myself, my future wife, my future kids, and my future. I lost 160 pounds through diet and exercise, then put on around 30-40 of lean mass, I currently weigh 180 pounds.
Push-ups: 90 in 2 minutes
Sit-ups: 98 in 2 minutes
Pull-ups: 41 in 2 minutes
2-mile run: 14 minutes 37 seconds
I feel I am in the best shape of my life and that it can still get better. I have no problems with authority, I actually prefer either taking orders, or giving orders, I am ok with either. I am a compassionate individual, I love to help, serve, protect, and watch over others. I am self-initating, hard-working, and love any opporunity to better myself or others.
My questions are, with my education and background, what my options would be as far as being a Medic with a Ranger battalion. My age is a concern of mine, contracts, contract lengths, advancement, entry, what to expect in training, and what your general thoughts are based on this introduction as to whether or not I would be a suitable candidate to become a Ranger.
I realize this introduction is a lot of self-masturbation and sounds arrogant, I assure you I am a humble individual. I always find it difficult to speak of accomplishments as I feel like it comes off as cocky and boastful.
Thank you all for your time, your service, and especially, your sacrifice.

Also, I could not find the Newt's avatar category and opted for a picture of Old Glory.

Re: Introduction- Marty
I am quite confident I have exhausted the search feature over the last 3 hours. A 68W w/ Option 40 is what I want, or if that is not available, accept nothing less than an option 4, then follow the directions I've found here during my recruitment process to make my way to the regiment.
Being as I have my A.A.S., my friend told me that I'd be able to enlist as an E-3, or possibly an E-4 if I hold to it. Any ideas on how I might go about obtaining this? I read about the College First option, however, I don't believe that pertains to me being as I have already graduated.

Welcome, Marty. Since you're pretty certain that 68W is what you want, start talking to a recruiter to get current information. But don't accept an Option 4 contract if being a Ranger Medic is truly what you want. Insist on the Option 40. Be sure to read and heed the ROE PM I have sent you.

Rangers,
Thank You All for your posts.
Ironically, about 5 minutes after posting my last question, I came across the FAQ. It answered all the questions I had and gave me the resources to learn more about what I will need to do. I'm also psyched about the PT required and can't wait to begin pushing myself to my limits, and then pushing some more.
That does actually pose a question,
What is a typical day like? Whether on assignment or at the base? Does that question make sense?

Re: Introduction- Marty
Rangers,
I have been filling out the majority of my paperwork at the recruiting station. I explained I only wanted a 68W w/ Option 40.
They did not have any of these available, however, they did offer me this.
68W
$5,000 sign-on bonus
E-4 starting rank
My choice of duty station anywhere in the world
If I were to accept I would choose Benning and I guess "make a name for myself" by showing my want to attend Airborne and RASP and see about getting there that way. Would you advise against this?
I guess my thoughts are, if they can offer me all those perks, how hard would it be to say, sure, you can also have a shot at Airborne and RASP.
Your thoughts?
As always,
Thanks for your time
