Hi Guys:
This is a little out of the usual caliber of discussion here... but...
My son is a boy scout, and in addition to the regular troop will be joining a venture crew with a lot of the other guys from the troop. The purpose of the venture crew is eventual competition shooting with match-quality .22's, which will be provided by the PA. National Guard from Indiantown Gap.
In the meantime, he will need a .22 (LR) with two capabilities - good iron sights, and the ability to mount a decent (not ridiculously expensive) scope.
Does anybody have any experience with .22's in competition shooting that they could recommend? Positives or negatives?
Thanks in advance...

Savage makes a couple very nice and light Youth .22's. They have just a little shorter stock than a "full" size. Accu trigger and one of them has a thumb hole stock.
Not sure what kind of accuracy you want... I.E. heavy target barrel and that sort of thing.

The 10/22 has massive after market support, everything from mild to wild. This would be a good thing to get as you can modify it easily and upgrades are relatively inexpensive. It really allows the gun to grow with him, and it will have lifelong use. You can also get a good .177 cal air rifle. Some of the National Match winners have gone to using them since the fundamentals are the same and you can fire it a lot more for less and even indoors.Flesh Thorn wrote:A Ruger 10/22 may be another option.

I wanted to thank you guys before I spaced it, that was good info. I'm researching them now, but he has to shoot it, so he will need to make the decision.
Thanks again for the help.

Re: .22LR Advice Needed
While a Ruger 10/22 is arguable the best & most versatile .22 out there, you would need to do some serious upgrading to consider it Match Ready. Also, I don't know the regulations on Match, but it is a semi-auto rather than a bolt gun.
I have a 10/22 which I tweaked with a new stock, 1" Bull Barrel, match trigger & 8x Walmart special scope. Shooting whatever is cheapest at Wally World, I can consistently group under 1/2 inch at 50 yards, and I can plink tennis balls all day at 100+ yards. It is such a fun gun.

Re: .22LR Advice Needed
Do a "biathlon rifle" search, you'll find a lot of info on .22LR there since it's the standard for all biathlon competitions.
