An U.S. Army colonel from Franklin County was recently thrust into the national spotlight when it became known that the son of Sarah Palin, Alaska's governor and Republican vice presidential candidate, was being deployed to Iraq to protect him.
Col. Burt Thompson, a graduate of Franklin County High School and Ferrum College, heads the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Fort Wainwright in Alaska.
One of the soldiers assigned to protect the commanding officers is Track Palin, son of Gov. Palin.
