Greetings Rangers, and all other AR patrons. My name is Kyle and I am 24 years old. After four years of college and A short minor league baseball career I recently enlisted as 11x with an option 4. After I had already signed and received my ship date (Fort Benning April 15th 2009.) I came across this site. After spending countless hours scanning this site I want nothing more than to serve my country as a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Although I only have an airborne contract it is my hope that I will be able to volunteer for RIP upon completion of Airborne school.
I thank all of you for your service to our country and for your willingness to share your valuable knowledge with all of us here. I have taken a small notebook, filled it with notes from this site and will be taking it with me to Basic. I know referring back to the things I have learned here will certainly help me along the way.
I look forward to learning more from all of you. Thank you again Rangers.
Kyle.

Re: Introduction
Welcome and congratulations for enlisting to serve our country. You may want to consider contacting your recruiter and explain to him that you want to renegotiate your contract to obtain an Option 40. This has worked for a number of men who have visited this site.

Re: Introduction
Welcome to ArmyRanger.com and thanks for your desire to serve our great country. Sure wouldn't cost anything to give Ranger Bill's suggestion a try. It has worked before.

Re: Introduction
Thank you Ranger Ron and Ranger Bill for your responses.
I have spoken to my recruiter several times, and even spoke with my original service counselor at MEPS. They have all encouraged me simply to volunteer for RIP upon my arrival to training rather than alter my contract at this point. (they assure me the option will be there.) I have not accepted that and have continually been after them to help me change it, but have been met with indifference and standard lines..."you'll have to push back your ship date" "there are simply not slots right now" "you will lose your bonus" "Maybe you can renegotiate on your ship day"...etc etc.
I am going to keep after them. I have read all the stories of "trying to volunteer during training" and Im certain I do not want my military destiny left to chance like that. Ive heard both scenarios of people doing so and being unable to do so....no thanks.
Thank you again for your help Rangers.
Kyle.

Re: Introduction
Rangers, just wanted to give you a sitrep, and ask for any more advice you may be willing to offer.
For a while now I have been after my recruiter to aid me in changing my contract, and he continues to give me every excuse imaginable. I am about to give the army many years of my life and this recruiter wont muscle through some paperwork and help me out in return. I dont get it. I am considering threatening them with not reporting on my ship date. This is my supreme last resort. I have every intention of joining the army but I will not leave my career to chance. I want the option forty and I dont really know how else to get through to them. I just want to know if thats something I could legitimately threaten them with. (I know all of this could have been avoided had I been smart about it initially but I was not so here I am.)
I appreciate any advice you may be able to give. Thanks.

Re: Introduction
I'm no recruiter, but I would say that it is unwise to threaten anybody. The fact is, you signed a contract, and they "own" you now. To them, you're another digit on their monthly report. They would rather focus on getting that next digit, not on re-doing your contract.
You might explain (respectfully) that your ship date and bonus don't matter to you. Let them know that it is worth whatever it takes for you to get Option 40 (if it is). If they still don't budge, then I would suck it up and drive on.
You need to shine in OSUT and Jump School, though. You need to be the dude that all the Drill Sgts are talking about (in a positive way). Make a big enough impression on them, and I'm sure they will assist you in finding a liason from the 75th.
Again, I've never been a recruiter, so I might be completely FOS. Good luck.

Re: Introduction
Thank you Ranger EP,
I took your advice and presented it to my recruiter one last time as respectfully as possible. No dice.
Just going to PT like a mad man and hope I can stand out enough to snag a Volunteer spot for RIP after Jump school. Thanks again.
