No Option 40?!?

Post by Ghostex »

I took my ASVAB yesterday and scored a 97 with a GT of 130.
My recruiter couldn't find anything on 11x with opt40 on the system, and he kept pushing other MOSes such as 68W(Medical Care) on me.
He calls me today and tells me that the only slots open for OPT40 are Truck driver, food specialists, and a bunch of other shitty ass jobs---no infantry or combat oriented MOSes. Its hard to believe that the premier light *infantry* unit of the Army wants Ranger tabbed cooks and drivers.

I then proceeded to ask about 18x slots, and he told me that i need to be 20 y.o to be considered for the contract. I thought it was that I had to 20 years of age by the completion of training.

So two of the jobs that I want the most 11x with opt40 and 18x seems like they are not available. I believe I am the first person, that the office has encountered, that wants to enter either of these fields. I know they are trying hard, but I can't believe anything they're saying. It is very depressing to be hearing this (if true). Any help to disseminate the misinformation is much appreciated.

oliviera436,

I have run into identical problems with my recruiter. After speaking with some of the other DEPs, it seems that the key may be constantly checking in with your recruiter until a slot is open. Also from what I understood yesterday, he can put in a request for a slot to be opened. Good luck.

Best day of my life so far.
Went back to the recruiter today and he called Recruit command or wherever. And long story short: I got my 11x OPT40 contract!!! Turns out the MOSes (which I hated) he was mentioning before were ones that received the OPT40 signing bonus. I don't care much for bonuses I just want my OPT40!!!

So with my current reservation I will be shipping out for Basic on July 31,2009. I just have to get my physical done, talk to the MEPs counselor, and enlist.

Stuck to my guns just like you said, Ranger JLTW!!!

Opt. 40 has nothing to do with a Ranger tab.
and you may want to reconsider this statement you made there Jr. Regimental cooks were the hardest working, best cooks I've seen in 20 years in a uniform. you know why? because they went through RIP just like I did as an 11B. they worked to stay there, just like I did. and they did great things for the Regt. When they cooked, they took care of their brothers. they also did some thing outside of the chow hall.

truck drivers... we didn't have any when I was there. we relied on a transportation unit from post to move our stuff when we needed it. the Regt saw a need to have their own truck drivers, and other supporters. I'm willing to bet, that those support troops are doing the best work of anyone in their MOS.

when you get to RIP, go find a scroll wearing cook or truck driver and tell them they don't have a place in their Regiment, when you haven't even earned the right to wear the scroll they do.
