Traditional Archery

Post by ANGRYCivilian »

Any traditional archers in here? I'm getting into it, and so far, I like it. I've never shot a bow, up until a few weeks ago. I seem to have some natural ability, which makes it that much more fun.

I shot both a long bow and a recurve on a 3D shoot, and it was a great. I do have somewhat of a problem, though. I'm left handed/eye dominant, have a 25" draw length, and am pretty comfortable pulling a 50lb bow for a few hours. Finding an off the shelf bow is very difficult. Solution: Have on built for me; which is what is being done now.

My first choice for a custom bow was Check Mate bows; but, the wait time was more than 8 months. After a ton of research into bowyers producing high-quality bows for reasonable prices and decent wait times, I found Mike Mecready. He's a retired Air Force Vet, and has great reviews about his bows and customer service.

I ordered his Prowler model; it's a short recurve: Bocote riser, black walnut/bamboo limbs, clear glass.

By the time he finishes the bow, I should be finishing up this crazy election year, and have some free time again. I'm pretty confident that I can hone my skills to deadly accuracy, and look forward to hunting hogs in a year or so.

Here's his site, in case anyone is looking for a custom bow at a very reasonable price. http://tradstore.com/mta/

I have a laminated long bow made by a friend that I used to hunt with. I killed a couple of rabbits and missed a couple of deer. I always still hunted. It took some patience and practice, but I never found sitting in a tree stand very fulfilling.

More than a decade ago I shot local competition long bow and recurve and was fairly good. Shoulder problems stopped that until a few years ago when a friend introduced me to compound shooting. It is fun, and I wish I had more time to go out and shoot. Good luck and keep us updated on what happens.

I have been a traditional and compound bow archer for over 20 years now. I shoot a Hoyt takedown recurve, a Black widow recurve and have an old Bear longbow I break out every now and then. I also shoot a Barnett and Oneida compound. I took it up at 14 and killed my frst deer at 15. I have never hunted a stand, I have always stalked. I prefer bow hunting to all other forms of hunting.

Enjoy the sport

I love archery for its simplicity, SQUEEZE, PULL, RELEASE, RELAX.... ALL of you must appreciate archery as well, I do, at least twice a day!!
