What fucks up magazines is the constant loading and unloading of them. You can keep mags loaded for a long time and they will still function.

Shooters of columbus has a bunch of HK maritime mags for 39 bones two weeks ago when I was in town.
I go with regular mags, replace the follower with the magpul self leveling one and the magpul 'Ranger' plate instead of the standard floorplate. The self leveling follower is probably unneccessary..but it makes me feel better so I use them. The Ranger plate or the regular magpuls are less of a pain in the ass than 550 cord, easier to grab and protect the mag when you practice magazine changes. Again...not 100 percent necessary, but once I started using them I liked them. The overall cost is a lot cheaper than a 40 dollar HK magazine, and the weight is less. The original magpuls work just fine, but they add a bit of width to the magazine, so they might not fit in your mag pouch the way you like. The Ranger plates are more expensive, but they don't add any extra width.
Issue mags are fine if you inspect them (no bent or cracked feed lips) , test them for feeding and dropping free from the mag well, take care of them and you don't expect them to last forever. If your mags from supply look like they have been around forever, they probably have so get new ones, test them on the range and save those for your go to war mags. Use the old ones for training only. I like having only tested magazines in my kit when I go outside the wire. Again, odds are that new mags will probably be just fine...but I like having the peace of mind of knowing that all my mags function before I leave the ECP.
Another technique is to put your initials and a number on all your mags. That way you can get your mags back when you let someone else use them, and if one of them gives you malfunctions you know which one not to take on patrol. If a mag hiccups, even once, it is never a 'go to war' mag ever again. I've seen some dudes stomp on bad mags so they don't get used again, then DX them when they get to the rear.
Also, the green followers are preferable to the older black followers. The green ones have a more restricted range of motion within the magazine than the black ones. They were designed to cut down on malfunctions. The Magpul self leveling followers take this one step further and only move straight up and down, they do not dip to any side at all.
By no means am I saying this is the only way, it is just a way. I was very fortunate to be on the USMA Combat Weapons Team when I was in college. We had three different senior NCOs from Regiment as NCOICs, as well as instructors from FBI, Law Enforcement, civillian side and others. Those guys taught us a lot of stuff that was directly applicable to killing the enemy and keeping Soldiers alive in combat. We shot 2 to 4 times a week every week for 3 years and those techniques worked for me. May or may not work for you.
This guy knows more about this than I ever will.

I've never had a problem with standard issue magazines. They are expendable, when they start giving you problems replace them.
My first exposure to the H&K mags was a shooting buddy that had just replaced all his mags with H&K mags. He chambered his first round and had a double feed, and had a few more issues thoughout the day. I saw nothing about them that warranted the high price.
Those new Magpul mags with the view window look promising though.

I swear by them without a doubt, and they fuckin' work when you need them too. Since you can take/mail mags and other questionable shit to Iraq but can't bring them home, I considered them supplemental life insurance. I can personally testify that there is nothing more horrifying than a weapon quitting during a significant emotional event. A quitin' weapon is the loudest fuckin' sound I ever heard next to the IED that hit us on Tampa----
I don't care if they cost $200.00 per mag. They are well worth the investment. I get em' for roughly $50 and am happy as hell when they are stocked up at the local Merc-Mart in Manassass or Woodbride VA.
It's important that you give yourself all of the chances you possibly can since the fuckin' hajis sure as shit won't. I think purchasing over engineered German magazines definately enhances your chances especially if you are a swashbucker - we certainly can afford them.....
