Everybody does not have what it takes. If you don't already have it by the time you go into service, chances are you ain't gonna get it. Regiment life just brings those qualities out and shines 'em up a little. A diamond in the rough, with the proper attention, will shine. But try to shine up a turd, and you still have a turd.
You increase morale in a unit by giving the men a healthy dose of really shitty times in order to help them bond. You can take that feel good shit and kiss my ass.
The beatings will continue until morale improves!

Now we are getting somewhere. However, the military in general and the Army specifically is about numbers the more we have the better off we are in combat (my opinion). That's where SOF comes in...to take care of the (don't quite know how to phrase this) hard stuff. I am in the National Guard and shit bags run rampant; they are not kicked out because we need the numbers to get money for training. It seems like the more a person fucks up the faster they move up...hence the term fuck up move up. Long way around the bush I know...but I am thinking it comes down to good leadership, which is hard to find. My personal opinion is that a person is born with leadership qualities these qualities are exploited not learned at the NCOES' that the Army forces us to go to. What litmus test shows these leadership qualities?
Since we cannot kick the shitheads out, we have to FORCE them to be soldiers.... if, after their enlistment is up they don't reup we are better off, but do we sacrifice numbers for morale?

YES! I would rather go to war with a handful of people that give a shit than go with bunch of shit bags.

These people not soldiers people(because soldiers give a shit about their job)don't join the guard to serve their country they join for fuckin college money. They just want something for free. No one wants to work for something anymore. Their mindset before they join is that of a turd so how do you think they will act when they are required to do their duty.

There shouldn't be any G.I. Bills given for service unless it is active. This would cut out most of the turd factor. Or if you do not perform your duties adaquitly while in the guard you loose your college money. Make them perform. Shitty performance, NO MONEY SHITBRICK!

When I was in, the 75 Regt., to my understanding, had the highest turnover rate in the military. Period.
There were numerous reasons for this.
Some guys passed RIP but couldn't hang with the lifestyle and training for long. These guys were weeded out quickly and sent to other units. Attitude problems are the first to get fucked with and the first to go.
Injuries. It is a very physical and mental job. IF someone sustains an injury, depending on the severity, they get sent to another unit if the recovery time is too long.
Personal fuckups. DUI's, domestic violence, bad checks, thievery, you name it. If you do something wrong you are removed from the Regt.
Disrespect. Absofuckenlutely not tolerated. When I was in, the Regt. was known throughout the military as the most disciplined unit. Period.
It is a very hard place to stay. Injuries ended my stint. I made it a little over a year.
Edited to add: I can't vouch for how things are today.

Some guys get away with more than others but only with little things. I'm sure it was the same way then. DUI's, Disrespect etc. still not tolerated. Even underage drinking now will get you the boot. It all depends on the 1SG and commander.

I think it is better that way. We had a few guys get busted out on alcohol related offences when I was in. I look at it this way, what is more important, staying in the Regt. or getting fucked up before your 21st B-day. Granted, I drank a lot before my 21st which I hit on the deployment to England. I was lucky I didn't get busted out also.
