Suspected U.S. strikes kill dozens in Pakistan

Post by Silverback »

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Two suspected U.S. drone attacks against militants in northern Pakistan over the last day have killed at least 55 people, including three top Taliban commanders, and wounded 50 others, Pakistani intelligence sources said Wednesday.

Qari Hussain, a Taliban commander, challenged the numbers, saying 45 people had been killed -- five Taliban member and 40 local residents.

The deaths were the result of two suspected U.S. drone attacks in South Waziristan on Tuesday.

In the first attack, a drone fired three missiles into a stronghold of a Taliban chief -- possibly a Taliban commander known as "Sangeen Khan" -- killing two people and injuring several others. The missiles hit a training camp in the village of Tehsil Ladha. Khan was reportedly among the dead.

The second drone attack targeted the funeral prayer in Makeen for the people killed in the first attack. The graveside services reportedly attracted a number of militant commanders including Pakistan's Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud, intelligence sources said.
