SITREP - Nico14

Post by Nico14 »

Well, it is finally time. I am sitting in the hotel unable to sleep, thinking about the journey I am about to undertake. I am excited and nervous and blessed beyond a shadow a doubt that I am able to pursue my dream. I would like to thank the Rangers on this site for their help in showing us DEPs how to act and the importance of the little things. This website has been a treasure trove of information and I believe that I am a step ahead of some of the other soldiers because of this website. I will continue to add to this thread whenever I get the chance. Can’t wait to get after it.

Roger, Ranger CharlieRanger1FFV.

Quick SITREP, still at the airport, I was given “leader” position of 6 Army guys (4 going to Benning). Our flight got delayed long enough that the connecting flight got cancelled, so I talked to the woman in charge and got 6 tickets for my guys and I on a plane with 10 tickets left. So today has been a day, a bit stressful, but rewarding having everything squared away right now.

Wow, been way too long since my last post. I am fully through Infantry OSUT and have long since been stuck in the purgatory that is Pre-RASP. I was fortunate enough to class up into the next RASP class that starts on Monday. I am beyond excited and nervous and anxious for this time to come. Some of my buddies and I have been all around the Columbus area this weekend trying to get all the necessary items to complete the RASP 1 packing list and now we are in full pack mode. I remember looking through this site many months ago dreaming about this moment and now it is finally here. I will be classing up with 5 other members of the site, I know that we will all motivate each other and help one another through the "suck" we will endure.

Well Rangers, we are on a Fort Benning pass for the weekend, but I am proud to say that 3 other forums members and I have secured Cole Range. It was cold and wet and a big suck fest but we stuck it out. I will post a more thorough update tomorrow because the library is about to close down. One step closer to the tan beret.

Today I have more time to reflect and recall on what I have experienced thus far and now it is time for a complete write-up.

Pre-RASP: I cannot say very much about Pre-RASP only because I was only there for about a week and a half, but from what I experienced, it is crucial to study the material you are given. There is a lot of monotony that goes into this stage of the process, but overall, you are given freedoms like your phone and getting released towards the end of the work day which is not something I thought I would experience. Use your time wisely and learn to love standing because that is a lot of what it is.

RASP Phase 1: The training you receive during this phase is fantastic and the cadre are unbelievably professional and expect nothing but the best. They are also some of the most fit people I have ever met. The PT is challenging but nothing impossible, even though it may feel like it in the moment. Run everywhere you go and when it is time to shut up, just shut up and listen. When you are doing PT, whether it be corrective training or organized, give your utmost to move to the front of the pack in the runs/rucks and do as many exercises as you can. When you apply yourself, you see results. The PT test got the majority of our class to fail, so in your off time, do all the pushups. When you think you are good on pushups, do more pushups, and more and more because the cadre grade to standard, meaning you have to train your pushups to standard.

Cole Range: Without going into specifics, to anyone reading this, make sure you are squared away on land navigation. Land navigation isn't too difficult, but it can get difficult when it is sub-freezing and you haven't slept in a few days. Nothing about it is impossible but just know it is going to suck. The reward is so much greater than the thought of quitting.

Find friends and use them to motivate you. I can't even think of how many times I was lying there in the cold and my buddies and I would look at each other and just smile. The little things like that go a very long way. Never quit and RASP 1 goes by quicker than you ever thought was possible.

Good write up on current events from your optic. Hopefully it helps someone else out prepping to go through. Glad you were able to find a friend in the cold weather. Were you big spoon or little spoon?

Roger Ranger Disinfertention. I was fortunate to be both little and big spoon. Having multiple friends has its benefits in the cold.
