Pre-RASP psychological tests

Post by johnzfre88 »

Rangers, I just finished reading Sua Sponte: The Forging of a Modern American Ranger by Dick Couch. The book follows the journey of RASP class 9/10 as they are selected and trained to become Rangers. It was a good read and I would recommend it to anyone who wants an idea of what it takes to make a Ranger. In the part where pre-RASP is being described the author mentions a series of psychological tests the last of which is the pre-lie-detector test "in which the candidate is asked simple background questions and not-so-simple ones, such as about drug use prior to entering the Army." So when the screener is asking those not so simple questions, is he looking to see if the candidate will follow Rodgers Rangers standing orders and never lie to a Ranger or officer? Or is he looking to disqualify any candidates who have experimented with drugs in the past?

You are over-intellectualizing. You will be interviewed several times as you enter active duty. Never, never quit!

Ranger Jim, are you saying that if I have experimented with drugs in the past I should just be honest about it at pre-RASP and not have to worry about it ruining my chance to be a Ranger?

Tell the truth, always.

One of the things I always suspected and learned for a fact when I re-classed from Infantry to Counterintelligence: you are only vulnerable if you have something to hide. Any mistake freely admitted is a hell of a lot better than a lie.

Rangers, I do intend to tell the truth, but what I really want to know is if the truth that I have experimented with drugs in the past will keep me from being able to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment?

OK, try this - reread every response here. see a theme?

There is no absolute black & white answer to you specific question. There are MANY things that might reduce or even eliminate your chances of serving in Regiment. Focus on what you CAN do or change, don't focus on what is out of your control.

that said "Tell the truth, always" & "never, never quit".

It is a generational thing. Have you been arrested for possessing or selling drugs? Recreational drugs is, I think, fairly normal. Never, never quit!
