Which Martial Art?

Post by chuck976 »

Hey Rangers. This summer I am going to have a descent amount of free time before heading off to college next year and I was thinking about getting into a martial art. I have been thinking about it for a while, but I'm not sure which one to try out. I have been thinking about just taking boxing lessons from a small gym in ghetto Covington, KY. I looked on here though and found many many more martial arts that seem like they would be very helpful too (Aikido, Krav Maga, or Ju-Jitsu). I live in Cincinnati, so if anyone knows of a good place I'm all ears.

Just because you see somebody on "The Ultimate Fighter" or what I like to call it, "18 idiots tearing up a house" doesn't mean that he's your best option. They usually think that they're famous and they will charge you accordingly. Gurgel has also lost four of his last seven fights, and previous to his extremely weak showing on TUF, his stellar record was against people that you have probably never heard of.

http://www.bullshido.net/

Check out bullshido.net, I found it a couple of years ago when I was laid up after shoulder surgery, it is hilarious about the martial arts and there a lots and lots of reviews of local dojos.

Pretty much a martial art fucktard's wet dream.....

You might want to look in to what martial arts your college offers. Mine offered Kung Fu, two different styles of Karate, Taekwando, Kendo, and at least one other I'm forgetting. They were all club activities at the school gym, rather than classes, so make sure you check the club and gym activities.

You don't have a lot of time left to learn a given style before you head off to college, so any martial arts training you do now will be great for fitness, but won't give you a lot of time to build technique unless you find something that carries over to whatever is at or near your college.

I'd avoid any instructors that are preaching their system as "THE BEST MARTIAL ART EVER!" or place too much emphasis in a belt ranking.

Lastly, note that "Kung Fu" and "Karate" are blanket terms and vary widely from style-to-style, so make sure you pay attention to labels such as "Wing Chun", "Shotokan", etc--it makes a difference if you are seeking continuity.

BJJ is by far the most practical, effective martial art. It has been proven time and time again. A combo of BJJ and some type of stand up training (Kickboxing, Boxing) is ideal.

P.S. I hope you were joking about the Aikido..

There's a big difference between being proven in an octagon and being proven when there are no rules. Krav Maga has been proven in combat by the Israelis for years.
