8th Army Ranger Company

Post by Jim »

On this date in Ranger History: August 25, 1950

The 8213th Army Unit is formally organized at Camp Drake, Japan -- more commonly known as the Eighth Ranger Company; the Commander - Lt. Ralph Puckett.

The Eighth Army Ranger Company was a Ranger light infantry company and was active during the Korean War.

As a small special forces unit, it specialized in irregular warfare. Intended to combat the North Korean commandos who had been effective at infiltration and disruption behind United Nations lines, the Eighth Army Ranger Company was formed at the height of the battle of Pusan Perimeter in September 1950 and was the first U.S. Army Ranger unit created since the WWII Ranger Units.

The company went into action as part of the 25 Infantry Division during the United Nations advance into North Korea in October and November. The company was best known for its defense of Hill 205 against an overwhelming Chinese attack during the battle of the Ch'ongch'on River which resulted in 41 of 51 Rangers becoming casualties.

I didn't realize there was numbered Ranger Companies in Korea. I thought they were all lettered companies. Thanks for the history lesson Sir.
