Specialist George V. Libby, age 23, was an automatic rifleman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Lewis, Wash. He was born on May 18, 1984, in Philadelphia, Pa. He died on Aug. 20 of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. This was his second deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism. He has deployed in support of both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Specialist Libby graduated from Pinecrest High School, Southern Pines, N.C. He also attended the Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst for two years. Specialist Libby enlisted in the Army from his hometown of Aberdeen, N.C., in March 2005 and completed One-Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Ga., as an infantryman. After graduating from the Basic Airborne Course there, he was assigned to the Ranger Indoctrination Program also at Benning. He graduated from the RIP in August 2005 and was assigned to 2nd Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment, where he served as an Automatic Rifleman.

Specialist Libby’s awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge and Parachutist Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal,.

He is survived by his wife, Valorie Avent Libby of Tacoma, Wash.; mother, Nell E. Allen of Aberdeen; father, Thomas M. Libby, Jr., of North Carolina; and a brother and sister, Ira Allen Libby and Rebecca A. Allen of Aberdeen.
