Army yanks XM25 punisher

But the XM25 has also received its share of criticism from door-kickers who say the five-shot, 14-pound weapon system is more of a burden than a benefit to combat units. In March, elements of 75th Ranger Regiment refused to take XM25 with them for a raid on a fortified enemy compound in Afghanistan, sources familiar with the incident said.

After an initial assessment, Ranger units found the XM25 too heavy and cumbersome for the battlefield. They were also concerned that the limited basic load of 25mm rounds was not enough to justify taking an M4A1 carbine out of the mission, sources say

Not the first time a Program Manager came up with a system that was not really needed -- or that worked as well as was claimed.

So I am reading the article, and keep seeing the word "prototype". Is it SOP to field prototypes?!?

I carried one of those kinds of radios for awhile. Just one more thing you had to carry since it didn't replace anything that was known to work. Of, and of course the batteries weren't compatible with anything else you were packing.
Not anything we have not experienced. Prototype equipment is often fielded in small numbers, and you are on the money about batteries. They develop a new battery for every radio (I swear, every new radio gets a new battery that cannot be used for anything else),

The RGT tends to field test lots of stuff.

I personally tested the PVS-14's (I down checked the plastic cross-piece) and the MOLLE system (told the test panel they could keep the thing).

If you want something tested to destruction hand it to a Tabbed SPC and wait 10min.

Tough

OK, I can understand "non-conventional" troops playing with the new toys.

Same shit happens with obsolete weapons.
I was in wpn squad (82nd) & one of our guys carried the bazooka (late '68), no one carried any ammo for it.

XM25 can be the ladies weapon to hump - test em for combat capability.
