Sua Sponte

Post by Headoutdaplane »

I was thinking...always dangerous. We were told Sua Sponte meant ' of their own accord' it seems to me, "of their own initiative' is clearer. Sponte being the root of spontaneous, spontaneity etc. The accord thing just doesn't make sense to me.

If you are a Ranger; it has always ment "Of Their Own Accord." Personally, I could care less about the translation. I know what it means.

If I was a Ranger, I guess a correct translation would mean something. If I was a Ranger..... :D

I know that to us it meant Volunteer.
We volunteered to join the unit,
we volunteered to do missions
we volunteered to be together.

Everyday was On the Job Training.

I never really thought of it in regards to volunteering, more in the light of taking the initiative, making decisions, and taking responsibility for those decisions. All of those things which I learned in Batt and have helped me lead a successful civilian life. When I was in Batt the motto was not stressed as much as the creed, something which also has helped me throughout life.

I did learn something though. I thought that Sua Sponte came into being with the Batts, I didn't realize the RVN LRPS/Rangers used it as well.

Anyway, that is about as much time as I will put into this subject....

Speaking of the DUI - we didn't know what it was going to be in 1969.

bottom pic) K/75 used this modified 4ID patch as a DUI - topped by our outlaw scroll

top pic) one of our K/75 Rangers at RR2013 (click pic to enlarge)

Volunteer takes one step forward in a combat zone & you & another volunteer where 98 look on & says you (two) are crazy to do so. That s what Sua Sponte means to me.

The motto has been a driving force to me through out my life during and since my Batt days. I think Nike stole it with the "Just Do It" campaign. No matter the situation, we take action. We do the right thing. We don't need orders or direction to make things happen. We are of the heart and mind to get shit done.

Idioms
9.of one's own accord, without being asked or told; voluntarily: We did the extra work of our own accord.
Origin:
1100–50; Middle English ac ( c ) corden, late Old English acordan < Old French acorder < Vulgar Latin *accordāre, equivalent to Latin ac- ac- + cord- heart, mind; see cordial, heart
