M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS)
by Tim Davis
The M24 is a bolt-action rifle that was designed to replace the semi-automatic M21. It fires the 7.62-mm NATO round, but is capable of being modified to fire the .300 Winchester Magnum. The M24 provides precision fire well beyond the range of standard issue rifles at high value targets. The Sniper Weapon System consists of the M24 long-range rifle, telescopic sight unit, and carrying case. The M24 SWS was designed in 1988, and in 1990, it began replacing the M21 in the Ranger Battalions.
