Question for RS cadre: Smartwool

Post by NBTNDT »

Rangers,

I assumed the socks you brought to RS had to be military issue. However, On the RS packing list it only says the socks must be wool with cushioned sole. This gave me pause. Is RS allowing some of the highspeed wool socks in? I no longer own any army wools socks and was planning on buying them, but I have a dozen pairs of black wool smartwools. Are black smartwools allowed now?

PPLT,
Here's the thing about the Ranger school packing list. What it says is what is authorized, honestly you might be able to sneak an elephant in if you get the right instructor, but are you willing to bet your shot at the Tab on it? Food for thought!

Thanks Ranger Silverback,

I was actually considering bringing enough of both and seeing if the Smartwools are let through. You brought up a point I hadn't considered: It appears making it through inspection does not mean it is authorized. It would not be worth the risk to be caught later in the course with an unauthorized item. So, I will not bring them unless I hear specific information authorizing them.

Socks?...fuckin' socks?
And this gave you...pause?
Sir,please report to your nearest available Ranger qualified NCO
and order him to pummel you about the head with the utmost severity!
And unless Paris Hilton is currently walking patrols what will give you pause is stepping from a Dahlonega river and pissing down your own leg for warmth!
Jesus Harry Christ...socks.

Yeah, it's much more important to figure out how to get massive amounts of Pogey bait in. You have enough pogey, you can find one of your fellow Ranger students who managed to sneak in the most high-speed socks available, and you'll be able to acquire them for the price of a half-eaten Snickers bar

I wouldn't take anything but cheap army issue, Sir. All your shit's gonna be fucked anyhow, why blow all your money on good socks just to get 'em fucked or have them tell you you can't use them.

3 pairs, 6 bucks. Clothing and Sales. They cover your feet, they are black, and they work like real socks! Plus there is no grey area with them. Good to go.

Yeah, it was a stupid question  . I am anal retentive about socks - learned my lesson when I went through selection with white cotton/nylon gym socks.

:? I hope so. That is why the Army doesn't issue cotton/nylon socks.

Yeah, I was clueless. 4 months out of MI AIT. Didn't know how to put a ruck together (didn't even know they were issued in pieces). A guy from a Ranger bat showed me how to put it together. When I filled it and weighed it to standard I thought it was really, really heavy.
