Re: Ketamine
Thanks.Fish wrote:I was trying to generate discussion on pain management in both the military and EMS sector. This forum is a bit stale and I was thinking that talking about relevant issues in pre-hospital medicine might help. It is not about being published, more about offering folks something to talk about and with someone who does it every day.
I was wondering what kick started it. I do know it was used on my youngest step son when he suffered a really bad fracture. He received it prior to the docs setting his arm. Afterwards, he had absolutely no memory of it at all. From what I observed, it was very effective stuff.
It was however, weird, listening to him ramble about things while he was under. I even asked him what happened to my pocket knife (Which had been missing for a week prior to this) He told me he was sorry and left it in the top drawer of his dresser......

Re: Ketamine
Well, I had a much longer response written out but it logged me out when I tried to submit it.
What are your thoughts on administering Ketamine without a Benzo?
What I've noticed is the patient can sometimes develop hypersenstivity to even the slightest touch or movement when Ketamine is given without a Benzo and I was wondering if ya'll have noticed similar side effects?

Move up here to Washington state, they sell it on every street corner. Won't be long before the VA starts stocking it.Silverback wrote:I am waiting for the day that I can pick up a pack of doobies from VA.

Re: Ketamine
Just to give you a little knowledge on it, its been used by Ranger Medics for years. Every Ranger medic is carrying and proficient in the use of ketamine. Its a great drug for a plethora of reasons. Its a dissociative anesthetic; so less to no memory of the event (less traumatic for the patient). Easy to titrate for a large range of situations (from pain control to procedural sedation). Multiple routes of administration (IM, IV, intranasal) and its damn near impossible to OD someone. I believe its being used by medics, army wide now also. It may be provider dependent in the big army.
