God bless them all. This world would be infinitely different if not for their courage, determination and great sacrifices.

Thank you each and everyone of them.

Watched a great documentary this morning with my coffee. On the World Channel WGBH.

Was called 'Day of Days June 6, 1944'

Great live footage, and lots of interviews with the studs that were there, including a 2nd Batt Ranger. Also had a brief interview with Field Marshal Rommels son.

They were great heroes one and all. There was a good film on the History Channel last week about the D-Day invasion. They mentioned a historical anecdote I was unaware of: Eisenhower prepared a press release/radio speech that apologized to the allied world for the failure of the D-Day invasion. Before the fact, he was halfway convinced the invasion would quickly transform into a massacre of the American, Canadian, and British boys going ashore in Normandy. If casualties got out of hand, he was ready to call off the invasion. In his speech, he takes full responsibility. He mans up on several issues. He shows us why he was a great commander. Yet instead of failing, we gained a foothold in continental Europe, and in less than a year, Hitler was no more. The world owes a great debt of gratitude to the boys who went ashore on June 6, 1944.

I had the opportunity to spend two weeks in Normandy in 1984, climbing those cliffs for POTUS #40, sitting in an LCM for three+ hours in the English Channel and learning from those great men. That is a memory that I will never forget and will cherish forever. I was humbled by their sincerity and respect for their fallen brothers and courage to take on the impossible. I will have to take out those photographs and papers one day and allow their memory and sacrifices to keep living.
The way in which a man accepts his fate and all the suffering it entails, the way in which he takes up his cross, gives him ample opportunity – even under the most difficult circumstances – to add a deeper meaning to his life.
