Any possibility?

Post by leroyjenkins »

Rangers,

I have a question that I cannot get a straight-forward answer on. I'm currently deployed with an SFAAT. I'm pretty much being fed the big, green weenie because I'm an 11A in a FA BN. I've already been told by my receiving BN CDR that upon redeployment, I will be getting a PLT (which sucks that it won't be during deployment, but you can't always get what you want). This brings me to my question. I'll be looking at 1 year (minimum) as a PL when I get back. Afterwards, I am going to apply for Ranger Regiment. I'm tracking the process for the most part (OER's, PT cards, 4187, letters of rec, boards, etc.); however, by the time I finish my 1st PL time, I'll be just over a year from promotion to CPT. I understand that the process of getting into Ranger Regiment is somewhat lengthy (both on the application side and RASP 2), so if all goes according to plan, I would finally get into a BN with under a year left until CPT. Is it possible to continue being a PL as a Jr. CPT? I've known CO's to sometimes be Jr. MAJ's (with those I've known, it was always their second commmand), so just curious if it could be possible with CPT's and a PL spot? As always, thank you.

Sir,

Just my .02, but I've seen plenty of junior CPT PLs, especially in BN.

Then again, since I was a mortar, the mortar PL is supposed to be a senior PL slot. Most of my PLs in mortar PLTs had already done rifle platoon time as well as XO time.

FYSA, I've seen this a lot with mortar PLs in the regular army as well.

Ranger Mortar Guy78,

I've seen it some, but like you said, it was always Mortar PLTs and I've also seen some SCT PL's that were Jr. CPTs. I was more curious on how prevalent it was within Ranger Regiment.

Ranger Jim,

SFAAT stands for Security Force Advise Assist Team. It basically replaced the MiTT and ETT.

Went back and did some reading. I recall your introduction from a couple of years ago. Recall you were USAR and went to OCS after undergraduate school. Given that you are working with Afgans, you may want to reconsider SF assessment. As an Infantry branch officer, you need to be a Platoon Leader, it is the best job in the world. Understand that in the Ranger Regiment, it is not uncommon for CPT to lead one of the special platoons (Scout, Mortar, AT, Support). I do know that some companies are commander by MAJ. Infantry branch may be able to help you with your assignments. Hopefully, you will be able to pick up your CIB while assigned as an advisor. Do not hesitate to PM me if I can be of assistance. I spent a fair amount of time with someone else's Armies, and certainly did not have a traditional career path.
