US soldier dies of rabies after dog bite in Afghanistan

Post by Flesh Thorn »

A 24-year-old American soldier died of rabies after being bitten by a dog last year in Afghanistan, US health officials said Thursday following an investigation into the rare case.
The otherwise healthy soldier started experiencing symptoms of shoulder and neck pain and tingling sensations in his hands soon after arriving at Fort Drum, N.Y., in mid-August 2011.

Sad. The disease is making a comeback in the US as well. Colorado State University did a capture/rabies test of skunks two years ago and discovered 120 rabid animals in Southern Colorado. They migrate from Eastern Colorado in the spring. The disease also affects bats, racoons, and coyotes. Be careful out there at night.

I was doing some reading and the incubation period in humans can be several years.

Those afghan dogs are something fierce. We had one of these monsters approach our patrol, barking and obviously looking for a scrap. Minimi gunner put a burst into him, he stumbled but kept coming so one of the lads followed up with his rifle, I couldnt believe my eyes the bastard kept coming with a limp, I pulled my 9 mm and put three rounds into him before he finally bit the dust.

Well damn that is a shame, but "why in the hell wasn't he vaccinated PRIOR to deployment?"
I mean damn, my last trip to the box I was a "Slob on the FOB" and even I had to get a rabies VAC. WTF?
