The only way a 20" barrel at that range would really affect you is consistency. It'll reach out there no problem. Some guys do it with a 20" but your ammo has to be perfectly handloaded and your optics have to be top shelf.

Would hope to shoot box ammo................

Try this out for speed. I bought this Howa in .308 about 2 years ago.

If you are looking for an excellent rifle, that will shoot 1/2 inch groups out of the box, go with the Accuracy International AE- .308. Runs about $3200, add another $800 for a Leupold Mk. V 4.5-20X50, and you have an awesome rifle. My team started out with Remington 700's years back, but have transitioned to the Accuracy's. There is no comparison.
