Rock Climbing

Post by Sams RV Park »

I'm trying to get a sense on how much rock climbing is emphasized during mountain phase. I've done a couple searches on this site, for "rock climbing", "mountaineering" and "mountain", nothing much came up. If you could share your Ranger School rock climbing experiences I would appreciate it.

My bad. I meant Ranger School (edited original post). I initially read about it here:

Not as much as in "Artic Phase"

Re-read all the FAQ's and rules to the forums before you make any other posts. Leatherneck's posts on Initiative and Integrity are also very good.

Hey parker, WAKE THE FUCK UP. What section are you posting in? 'RIP', dumbass. Don't ask Ranger School questions in any other section; you're liable to confuse somebody, not to mention look like an assclown. :x

You will learn:

Knot tying
Rappelling yourself and also yourself and a buddy
Belaying an ascending climber
Aid climbing using loops and a series of fixed points (pitons)
How to move safely over rock
A limited set of handholds, footholds, etc...
Building a rope bridge to cross a water obstacle.

You will not be learning about all the different aspects of climbing as is usually done in the civilian world and no, you won't be wearing colorful spandex tights and tie-dye shirts, if that is what you were wondering.

The course is designed to teach you the basics of technical rock climbing and how to be safe in doing so. The most difficult route you will climb is probably 5.6+.

The rest of the mountain phase of Ranger School is planning and conducting dismounted infantry patrols, and small unit tactics over mountainous terrain.

Ranger Spartan, thanks for the detailed response. That 5.6+ info was what I was looking for.
