Introduction
Hi everyone. I'm Tim a 19yr old confused young man. I've been in college for two years but it just doesn't feel right for me at the present moment in my life. I have been deeply considering the army with an 11x/ OPT 40. I know I would have to retake my ASVAB, hopefully I haven't gotten any dumber over the past 2 years. This site has been very helpful and I love reading all the post. I'm just glad there's a search button because it works wonders for me.
Potentinally joining the army.
Welcome....
If you quit school why will you not quit when it "doesn't feel right for me at the present moment in my life" when you are in the Army?

Ranger RTO, when you decided to join how much did your family affect your decision? My family will support me in whatever I choose to do but it's my girlfriend that could possibly not support what I do. How do you go about telling them this kind of information and gaining their support?

you are too young for your girlfriend to affect what you want to do. I don't care how long you've been together, or how much you think you love each other. you make the choices that are right for you, and no one else. let the chips fall where they will. She'll either support you or not. chances are if you join, she'll be gone in a few months, and a few after that, you'll be ok with it.
your parents aren't living your life either, so do what's right for you and no one else. staying in school may be the right choice. no one can take your education from you. You will never be at a loss for having learned something, just don't waste you time in school.

My liberal Democrat 'why can't we all just be friends?' birkenstock wearing tree hugging parents were against my decision to join.Tim18 wrote:Ranger RTO, when you decided to join how much did your family affect your decision? They didn't even say goodbye when I left. I called home my 3rd week of Airborne school and they had had a change of heart. They flew across country and came for my Abn. graduation. (my father even showed up with a fresh high & tight!) They decided that I was their son and they would love and support my decision and be proud of me. I led from the front and they fell into place.
I made the decision that was right for ME and I never looked back. I'm glad your parents support you.
But your girlfriend? Dude. GET A SET OF BALLS. Lead from the front. If she is not willing to follow you and support you now, what the hell kind of life do you think you will have with her later?
Either you won't have a life, or you won't have her later because when she tires of pushing you around she will look for a real man that she can follow.
So how to gain her support? First, YOU need to know WHY this thing you want to do. Reading these forums may help you with that.
Then tell her what you are going to do. Don't ask her. Tell her. It's not her life or her decision to make. If she decides to follow you, good. If not, good riddence.
Punch her inna face and tell her to get the fuck down and knock out 100.

At 19, the only support you need from your girlfriend is her cupping your balls while she blows you.
If you want to do something with your life, go out and do something with your life. Don't let some extraneous bullshit drag you down.

91W raised a good point.
On the other hand, most 19 year olds haven't figured out what they want to do for the rest of their lives (fuck, I'm about to turn 46 and I'm STILL trying to figure it out).
If you've got the sand to make it into the Regiment, even if you only do a single tour, you'll come out the other end with experience, more maturity, self-discipline, a good work ethic, a boatload of well-earned self-esteem, maybe some cash saved up...and you'll STILL have those 2 years of college credit.
The big question, of course, is do you have the sand?
PS: Fuck everybody else's opinion. Your life is yours to live.
