Interstate Coining

Post by Rock Island Ranger »

Driving on the west side of Katy, back windshield jump wing, Texas A @ M sticker, Ranger Tab. Guy has an old man in the car. I pull up next to him, honk, salute, and coin him. He looks like he saw a fucking ghost, looks at the old man, old man seems to be explaining "WTF". Guy shruggs his shoulders and puts up his hands to say...I aint got one! I do the pushup motion followed by the drinking motion. His old man tells him to pull over. I pull in behind him, both get out, I introduce myself, they do likewise. I smiled and said, pushups or beer, whats it going to be? The old man laughs and says...I told the boy he better get one. Young man is a 2nd LT, looks lost as Hogans Goat and says, I never got a coin when I graduated. Old man says, shit son...were on Interstate 10, knock em out or buy this man a beer. The LT elevates on his bumper, old man is laughing...LT does 10 and one for the Big Ranger...acts kind of sheepish. Old man did his time in the 60's, 82nd Airborne but he KNEW what the coin was. Guy says, soon as I get back to Hood Im buying one. Old man slauted ME and says, AIRBORNE. I say Rangers Lead The Way....LT is red faced as a mother fucker.
GOD, I do love ambushes.

I hate asking this, because I know I'm going to get ripped apart, but...

Rangers (or someone who takes pity on me), what, exactly, is the coin?

I searched around a little bit, and I think I have a pretty good idea what it is, but I was hoping someone would help me really understand the significance.

Thank you.

"You are lying, you probably bought that coin on ebay"
My response would be..."Yeah, and I bought this tat and that Ranger sticker on E-Bay, too. Oh, and BTW fucknuts, 10th Grp had the FIRST challenge coin. Take a closer look at mine and STFU!!"

I would LOVE for Pastor to coin me if I was out near Katy. Hell, I would EXPECT it. And even tho the first round would be on him...my AMEX has no limit.

I just think it's fucking funny that the old man had to tell him what it was..... and then to say push or buy to boot! Now that's squared the fuck away.

I have a coin but I hate getting checked. Why? Because I was given a 3rd Group coin by Top...I was in 3rd Group but I always get the same reaction.

"Oh! your SF? "
"No"
"Well why do you have an SF coin?"
"I was assigned to Group, but I was not on an ODA"

Ready?......

"You are lying, you probably bought that coin on ebay"

I have heard that three out of the last 5 times I have been checked. It is getting old trying to explain the way Groups are set up compared to conventional Army.
The coin that I carry every day says

SPECIAL FORCES INTELLIGENCE
1st Special Forces Group (Airborne)

the bottom says SPECIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR SPECIAL MISSIONS

The back says DE OPRESSO LIBER, and WITH HONOR.

You were in (not attached to) a Special Forces Group. My beret was maroon; it doesn't change the fact that I was in Group.
