Question about transferring to Regiment

Post by Nomad »

I recieved this PM for Archangel. He is a regular grunt on Fort Lewis and has been quite driven to go to Ranger School, but moreso wants to go to a Battalion. Here is the PM I got:

Ranger Matador275,
A quick question for you. I was intially reassigned from 1/5 IN to 2CR, however 2CR is overstrength and sending soldiers right back to there units. 1/5 IN cant keep me because of a lack of time left in the Army. It strikes me as a good time to request/beg/plead for an opportunity to serve in the Ranger Regt. My question to you is do you think it is a good idea to request RIP from 2nd Ranger Batt. directly?
Thank you for your time.

Any ideas here?

He needs to put in a 4187 for RIP. He will need to send it to his branch rep at DA.

If he's short he might have to re-enlist for it with either an OP7 or OP14, if they still do that.

Best advice is right there above, also call Regimental S-1. If he has contacts at 2nd BN that are in the COC. Letter of recommendation would not hurt, but he is unlikely to receive it without ever attending RIP/ROP.

I would go find the CSM's desk and stand on it.

I'm with Puck. I'm sure the CSM does not want to lose a good soldier, but I have to believe that most do not want to hold back some one who is reaching for the proverbial brass ring.

Never had any luck with the DA / 4187 route myself. Usually required some old crusty guy like Puck making a few phone calls, then the 4187 was submitted.

This is pretty much what I did Matador, walked in as a leg out of AIT, talked to the training NCO (SFC Moore?) don't recall his name right now, he laughed and brought me to 1st SGT. Arden, who laughed and brought me to CSM Duke. CSM Duke looked at all 150 lbs. of me at the time, laughed, shook my hand, said boy you got some brass balls don't ya, walking in here.
(I had no idea what kind of lion's den I had actually just walked into.)

He shook my hand again and said welcome aboard.

They took me. Changed my orders that week to 2nd Batt.

Timing? Luck? They liked me? (doubtful  )

Sometimes this is the best way to do things, the old fashioned way, go in there, look them square in the eye, and tell 'em you want to volunteer.

A word for him Bullkiller, tell him to try and NOT look like a leg (no moustache, starch n shines, etc.) Be prepared for shit, laughter, abuse, but tell him not to even flinch, square as a fucking box and don't take no for an answer unless he's being beaten and physically thrown through the gate.
Then he may want to rethink it...

Have the solider go see one of the 2/75 1SG then up to the BN CSM for a letter of acceptance to add to a re enlistment packet, a call from the CSM to his branch would help also.

Once he gets to RIP there might be some problems keeping him on track but at least he is in the system..

Good luck

I think ********** is a 1SG at 2nd Batt. He might try ****** if he's still there. If not, **************** is there waiting to take a 1SG gig in one of the line companies.

Don't move this thread out into the open just yet....... Done.
