Devilrat-

You increase your ability to do pushups by doing them...meaning, bench press won't help your ability to do pushups.

Do variations.....say, 10 normal, 10 wide, 10 close, 10 diamond.

Repeat as many times as you can....when ya can't do ten, just do as many as you can.

On your last set, go to your knees and push until you literally cannot raise yourself up.....meaning, when you collapse on your chest, if you are able to push yourself up, you cheated yourself...You should have to roll over and get up that way.

Two schools of thought here.....

A. Do this every other day, with rest in between...or

Pick a number, say 25 pushups....Knock out 25 pushups every hour on your waking hour, everyday...your pushups WILL improve.

Go to your local library and/or bookstore and pick up some books on SEAL conditioning. No Ranger ones that I really know of...while all the Rangers are out in the field, them SEALS are making videos and writing books...go figure....

I (gulp) have one of Stew Smith's books....

at the risk of sounding blasphemous, as an aspiring warrior, you need to be DRINKING in knowledge...as long as it is credible, I will read and learn from army, navy, AF, Marine books, etc. Open your mind.

That's it for now.

find three chairs.

set them up. Feet on one chair and each hand on another (so you're im normal push up stance but w/ chairs under you) now you can go REALY deep when doing pushups 8)

pullout metal chairs work well for this.
Slip away.

No problem. That was just off the top of my head.

If you aren't familiar with fitness concepts, get a decent book (like a bodybuilding book) and check them out.

You want a decent book to check out? "SWAT Fitness".

Remember, 90% of being a Ranger is mental.

Rangers mostly ruck, run, and do pushups/situps..I'm generalizing, but unless things have changed dramatically, your ability to ruck will make you or break you as a soldier.

Here is a workout that is intended to prepare you for Ranger School. 8) It is a little more than just pushups, but it should help. From what I have read, an effective way to increase the number of pushups you can do for the APFT, is to do as many push ups as you can in 30 seconds. Do this until you feel you are ready progress to 45 seconds or one minute. Gradually work up to two minutes. You pretty much want to set an ideal pace for number of push ups, and gradually increase the length of time you can do it until you max the push up portion of the APFT. 8)

Eggplant,

Checked out that link....

Anyone (like that guy on the website) can say, do this for XXX.

Point being, I'd listen to a military veteran over a civilian bodybuilder on a website for advice on getting ready for the military.

I'm not knocking that particular workout plan, I'm just saying don't take it as gospel.

If you are around 18, you'd do fine with something like running mon-wed-fri, rucking on tuesday and possibly thursdays.

Pushups/pullups m-w-f, abs tues-thursday.

The above was typical of what I did in the army for PT for my 4 years.

FYI.

Roger, Ranger wm311. 8) Thanks for the information.

I figured I'd start the plan that I found on Monday, and see how it goes. 8) I've got plenty of time so I can try several different workouts and see which is most effective. Cart pushing has been rather helpful so far.

Ranger Luna answered yer question. The ONLY way to improve the amount of pushups you can do is to DO PUSHUPS.

Has anyone tried the concept that Ranger BadMuther stated of doing push-ups every waking hour everyday? If so, do you recommend it?

I read about this theory on militaryfitness.org, but I have only been doing the first method that Ranger BadMuther mentioned of burning myself out on MWF with push-ups/pull-ups/sit-ups.
