I was thinking King Leonidas Vs Richard Simmons. I think all that hand flapping would confuse the Spartan King [/quote]

From what I have read about Spartans and their penchant for male "friends" I figgure this one would turn into a flapping hand competition.

I don't think that the Rangers who do so are really thinking about the pederast issue.

Just sayin'.

I'd like to see Ranger vs. Spetznatz, if it hasn't been done already.

It's been done, The Spetzers won out by a slight margine because of weapons.

It was done but it was SF vs. Spetznatz.

The Special Forces specialty weapon was a E-Tool

And the Spetzer's specialty weapon was the ballistic knife

I also recall that the show used the popular "Green Beret" terminology throughout most of the show, including the match-up title...not that it changes what those troop's missions are or how they train, but it does indicate that the show is geared more towards pop culture and less to realism.

Alright... time to kill this one again.
OK, there are two main Greece city states at this time. Athens and Sparta... yes there was others, but these are the two biggies. Someone will inevitably mention that the Spartans were homosexual. Though homosexuality was just about everywhere, like it is today, it was larger in other areas.

Sparta was the least homsexual city state you had. Athens was extremely homosexual. So folks tend to get the two confused.

Now... why is that?

Sparta was the only Greek city state where women possessed economic power and influence. The women engaged in sport (sometimes naked) and were given public recognition for their triumphs. Spartan women voiced their opinions in public and the men listened to them.

Women in Athens were excluded from all public affairs and kept behind locked doors. Women were not allowed to inherit property or be educated.

So what are we looking at here? Translated into today's society... Sparta is the U.S. and Athens is the Taliban.

So, was there homosexuality in Sparta? Yes. Was it widespread? No (did I mention about women competing naked?). Was there homosexuality in Athens? Yes. Was it widespread? I think this is where Man Sex Thursdays started.

So we are looking at Fort Bragg versus San Francisco.

To give you an idea of what the average Spartan thought of homosexuals in the military, Philip II of Macedon erected a monument to the Sacred Band of Thebes, a homosexual unit, because he was impressed by their bravery in battle. The Spartans made fun of it, and Philip wrote about the Spartans "Perish miserably they who think that these men did or suffered aught disgraceful."

So why do so many folks think there was a lot of gay Spartans. One reason is they don't know there are two different parts of Greece at that time, with two different ways of thinking... but the other reason is that there isn't a lot of Spartan art, poetry and writing. So most of what we know about them comes from their enemies and critics... who had a heavy homosexual bias.

Pet peeve. The Spartans at Thermopylae is one of the pieces of "evidence" the left uses to try to prove that homosexuals do great in combat. The basis of their argument is that the Spartans were mainly homosexual.
