What unit were you in the 8th ID? I was at Lee Barracks in Mainz 86-88.

What unit were you in the 8th ID? I was at Lee Barracks in Mainz 86-88.

I had what was probably the biggest sham assignment in history for a grunt.

I was on Wiesbaden Air Base attatched to H Co 4th AVN Regt. I was part of the 8TH ID Pathfinders. There were 10 of us assigned to the unit. The division had TO&E slots for 10 of us they just wouldn't fund shit. So we were not on Jump Status, and get this not one of us had the Torch either. Basically what we did was teach sling load op's/Rotary Wing AC Characterists along with actions on the LZ/PZ to support units in the 8TH ID so they would know how to sling load there shit. We also ran the LZ/PZ at the Division TOC/TAC and kept the UH-60/CH-47 pilots current on there sling load OP's. Nobody really new what in the fuck to do with us so it was some serious sham time.

We did some training with the units at Lee barrack, some air assault ops. if you ever did an Air Assault while you were there it was the UH-60's from our unit along with us handling the training.

You must remember CSM H.T Fields then.

Our CSM's name started with K, he replaced Fields maybe. Yeah the 'pathfinder division' (8th ID) what a mess. We always wondered if there were actual pathfinders, so I guess the answer was...sort of. Good for you brother on that duty assignment, it sure sounds like it beat being a track toad.
