Sorry BM, the above mentioned items and a recon mission are a NOGO. All jokes aside. A good recon man had to stay focused on the job at hand. Day dreaming or pulling your dick could get you killed. Each mission must be done in a very professional manner.

Stead, I was referring to recon missions conducted off-duty.

Oh. I feel like a dummy.

One time while on a radio relay on FSB Denice which was about 6 KM's out of An Khe. After the last team left the field. We were told to shut down for the night. Two of us (there were only 3@8hrs each) hopped a deuce and a half with our weapons and LBE and spent a quiet night in a house of ill repute. Came back in the morning. Not much to say Jim. No colorful stories from me. Our 3rd's wife had a baby while we were at the FSB. That was the most memorable thing that happened then. 8)

P.S. BTW Jim, the guy you met, my buddy & I that rode to town together.

"Can anyone tell me how much a water full 1 qt canteen weighs?"

A gallon of water weighs 8 lbs 3 oz. Take it from there. I only carried 1 canteen. I preferred bladder bags. I carried two 4-quart bladder bags and one canteen, or about 18 lbs. of water (including container weight). Ad that to a 65 lb ruck (including web belt, weapon, and ammo, and you have something around a 90 lb load on day one, whittled down to maybe 65-70 lbs on day 5.

That's the flash suppressor....we taped over them to keep shit out, and to keep them from getting caught on things (vines, etc.).

I only saw a flash supressor on the 16 and it was longer than 4, or 5 inches. I have a picture of it on Sgt Barreto's weapon (unfortunately I haven't posted it).

BM, it were the tall guy (Mike), The short smiling guy was Robert.

Everyone who answered flash suppressor with electrical tape is absolutely right.

Water was the most precious commodity (except during the monsoon....when any recon zone in I Corps was like the Titanic ballroom -about 2000 ft down ; - )

Most of the time, no matter how much water a LRRP/Ranger took out, it was never enough.

That's funny. The buffer spring in the Car-15 was the single part that always gave us nightmares. I thought that's what you were referring to. Did you read my Car-15 story?

Ahh, I thought you meant a AR buffer.....

Yeah, you would have a buffer, now get upstairs and get the recruit's barracks floor shining there Top!

Stead, Yep, I have a picture of Mike, couldn't remember his name though.

I would have to imagine the tape on the suppressor would increase the flash...which was alwasy a problem for short AR's anyway.

Who cares!? If you had to blow that tape away, your last worry in the world at that point was trying to hide your presence. Usually there were 30 frags arcing through the air right about then anyway. The idea wan't to engage in contact. The idea was to break contact and get the hell out of there.
