hobbit's introduction

Post by hobbit »

Greetings,

My name is Tom Sweetnam, "hobbit" being my code name for Ranger operations in Vietnam. I'm a semi-retired commercial writer/journalist who did two tours in I Corps, the first with L Company Ranger, 101st Airborne Division, and the second with 101st Airborne Division PSYOPS. Along with fellow L Company Ranger vet, Randy White, I've edited a lot of the photo material for the 101st Airborne Division LLRP/Rangers of Vietnam web site. Please come and visit:

Welcome to the board Ranger Hobbit,
I was looking at your website, particularly the photographs of the F company. A few of the names jumped out at me: "Dozer", Contreros, and a few others. I read a book a few years ago, I believe the title was "Six Silent Men." I may be mistaken, but I am pretty sure that was it and it contained the exploits of these men. I no longer have the book on me to check for myself but was wondering if perhaps you could verify this for me. Either way, although I'm no Ranger, welcome to the board and thank you for the website. I have a certain fondness for the 101st as well 8)

Nope. No major changes. We've spent 5 years now trying to get the guys to part with their photos for a week or two so we can scan them and add them to the corpus of Ranger history. We've accumulated a pretty good collection on the site. The only significant change is that the guy in these photos just keeps gettin' better and better looking every year ; - ) :

Thanks Slowpoke, BadMuther, Dud, and Ripcord.

Re: Six Silent Men.

This was an attempt at writing a three-volume history of 101st Airborne Division LRRP/Ranger operations in Vietnam. My closest e-mail buddy, Ken Miller, wrote volume 2. So yes, 1st Brigade LRRP, F/58, and L Company Ranger operations are all included in the trilogy. Honestly however, these three volumes covered only a fraction of the actual operations conducted by these units. "L Company Ranger" is known in the publishing business as "Literary Company Ranger" because of the number of writers emerging from the unit. I think at last count, some 19 books had been published on the 101st LRRP/Rangers in Vietnam. Even then, probably 50% of the history has yet to be written. Randy White, our unit web host has spent five years ferreting out after action reports from the Pentagon, and is adding a great deal to filling in the blanks.
