Introduction: Woody18
Rangers,
My name is Brady, I’m 17 years old and a junior in high school. I live in North Carolina while I currently attend a boarding school in NJ. Ever since middle school I’ve wanted to join the military, first be drawn in by the idea of completing the selection processes of special operations that few could achieve. In a way, I had something I wanted to prove to myself. I grew up very patriotic and I do feel a sense of duty to protect and give back to a country and family who have given me a lot of opportunities, yet just the same, I am drawn to becoming a Ranger on the idea of constantly pushing one's limits and constantly learning.
I plan on enlisting with an 11x Option 40 before I graduate, not too far after I turn 18 this upcoming summer.
I’m hoping here that I will have the ability to continue learning and become aware of more ways in which I can better prepare myself for what lies ahead.
PT scores (from today):
Push-ups: 90
Sit-ups: 76
2-Mile Run: 12:46
Pull-ups: 20

Re: Introduction: Woody18
Ranger Jim - No, I have not yet contacted a recruiter. I do not graduate HS until June of 2018, so my thought was to wait until being around a year out before doing so.
Would your suggestion be that I begin a conversation with a recruiter earlier even if I cannot officially DEP until 5-6 months from now?

Rangers,
2 weeks have officially passed - here is an updated PT Test:
Push-ups: 87
Sit-ups: 72
2-Mile Run: 12:40
Pull-ups: 20
Improved in run, but fell slightly in push and sit-ups. Disappointed there but will work to improve in next one 2 weeks from today.

Rangers,
Updated PT Test:
2/20/17
Push-ups: 91
Sit-ups: 67
2-Mile Run: 12:21
Pull-ups: 21
While push, run and pull have steadily increased, sit-ups have decreased since the last test. If anything, it certainly shows a lack of focus in this area - one that I'll need to turn around. I'll be putting together a plan to add to my daily workout routine to make sure that when I take this again two weeks from now, that number is instead going up.

Re: Introduction: Woody18
Try metronome pushups. I've witnessed very few people do 90 correct form pushups. It's not a doubt but a challenge.
Stay motivated :)

Re: Introduction: Woody18
Roger, Ranger Jim. I have begun (3 weeks ago) to plan my weekly tasks on a spreadsheet for each day of the week on Sunday night - including: wake-up times, workouts, reading, journal etc. I try to make the times as specific as possible for the given day. This is helping me stay on track and organized with specific times and details for the major tasks I want to accomplish that day of the week. So far, I have noticed that it has improved my time efficiency and decreased the time I would previously have spent imagining out a schedule during such an evening for the following day.
Additionally, Rangers, two weeks have gone by - here is an updated PT Test from this morning:
Push-ups: 92
Sit-ups: 64
Run: 12:18
Pull-ups: 21
My sit-ups, again, were not where I wanted them to be - however, I really focused to ensure that I was doing the form correctly for each event. I kept a controlled and constant pace for the push-ups until 60 and then broke off into sets of 5, with short breaks in between in the up position, all the way up to 90 (finishing at 92). With sit-ups and pull-ups, I did my best to keep a constant pace all the way through. I often feel as though I am practicing the form correctly, but I always doubt whether that is something I can fully tell while I am undergoing the test myself. I hope to get a friend or school trainer to watch me during my next PT Test to be sure that I am doing them correctly, or make adjustments if that is not the case.

Re: Introduction: Woody18
Brady, it's hard to give PT advice over the internet... but no one is around to stop me so here goes.
Good job on paying attention to your pushup form. Remember, if you put your ass up in the air or sag in the middle to try to "rest" you need to return to the full start position before you begin another pushup.
For situps, I look like a chopped up pancake breakfast with tons of syrup... Just a hot fucking mess when I do them. Some people go for the slow and steady approach with just their shoulder blades touching and then they come back up... Others, like me, literally throw themselves back when they reach the top of the situp relaxing the muscles and using the force off the ground to come back up. Which one is better? Neither... situps are terrible for you.
Good run time though...great pullups. If you want to be faster on your 2 mile run do a 1/4-1/2 warm up. There is very limited time to do this on a real APFT but it is possible to do a 200meter ish warm up. Start faster, finish stronger. 2 miles is a very odd distance to run. It's not a sprint, it's not a jog... somewhere inbetween.
