I've been there; it is located at Fort Belvoir, VA. A few years ago Army decided to bring together collections of artifacts and art that was stored in a number of locations around Washington, DC. An amazing collection.

Might need to make a donation to the museum effort. This is to valuable to be kept locked away....

I wonder how much a Hitler watercolor would go for at auction?

A Norman Rockwell painting broke auction records this past December, selling for $46 million. That's the most ever paid for an American painting sold at auction. I'll bet the army archives has dozens of Rockwells.

This is great and all, but what the fuck! All I can ask is WHY. I say sell that shit and throw it at the national debt. I am not saying everything should go but why have all this if it isn't on display to be enjoyed?

My answer is no. Most Army museums rotate their stock (as do most museums) to encourage visitors. Having dealt with Congress and the national debt over the years; if the treasures were sold, and the debt reduced, Congress would find a way to spend the money. Just look at Detroit, they are looking to sell their art.

Just as that video demonstrates, when I first saw "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and that ending scene, I knew in my heart there was truth in that notion of some vast government warehouse(s) storing incredible amounts of priceless, invaluable, and historical items for decades. Everyone knows stories of old barns and attics holding valuable stuff that the families forgot or didn't care about, old cars in old garages, and such. Now think of the huge federal bureaucracy which has been around almost 240 years with all its 'efficiency' and all the stuff it has acquired. Vast amounts have been scrapped, melted down, burned, and otherwise disposed of, but I would bet money there is a lot of stuff still hidden away all over the country. The Smithsonian has been called the nation's attic, and I have read about all the stuff the Smithsonian still has in storage yet to be displayed.

To me, this particular storage facility is just the tip of the iceberg.

Indeed, priceless is the word. Here is a recent Washington Post article:

I went by on Thursday. Talked to one of the workers. CBS News were taking Video (don't know when it will be shown). They offered a tour if I can get a group. My goal is to take a tour in March. Should be worthwhile. If you are in NOVA, send me a PM and I'll include you.
