Ron Paul: The Founders believed in sccession

“Secession is what we did when we left England, it was a wonderful thing”

UPDATE: RADIO HOST CALLS FOR ‘SECOND AMERICAN REVOLUTION’
Congressman Ron Paul reacted to the secessionist movement sweeping America today by reminding people that the United States seceded from the British empire, while slamming those who suggested their fellow Americans should be deported merely for talking about the idea.

In the aftermath of petitions from all 50 states to secede being posted on the White House website and signed by over a million Americans, the secessionist movement has been portrayed as anti-American, unpatriotic and even treasonous. In reality, as Ron Paul has emphasized, it is as American as apple pie and George Washington.
Paul updated his thoughts on secession during an appearance on C-Span today, noting how “The founders believed in it, there’s no prohibition in the Constitution against secession,”

When they were framing the Constitution, one of the compromises was that the large states population was recognized in the House of Representatives. The fact that each state, regardless of population, had the same number of Senators; and the senate was treated as the Senior Chamber, further expanded the compromize. Ron Paul is, I think, standing on a rather sandy principal. Oh, yeah, "all politics is local."

Secession was a standad belief of not just the founding fathers, but just about every state up until 1860. It was almost used several times before the civil war. The most famous was the Hartford Convention when the Federalists threatened secession of the northern states due to them not getting their way in the War of 1812. What finally ended the argument was the War of 1812 ending, discrediting the Federalists to the point that they ceased to exist as a major party.

Whether or not secession is legal today depends on whether or not it is successful. If you win, and also win the following war, then you get to change the law and rewrite the history.
