Hog Loads

Postby YoungDeerSlayer » February 1st, 2012, 12:41 am

I'm going on a hog hunting trip in GA in a couple weeks, no I'm not goin down to hunt for fat chicks. I was looking for the best 223 load to use in my AR, I'm takin my buddie's Mk 12 along for the hell of it. I'm leaning towards the Hornandy V-Max. Any help is appreciated.

The best round for hogs down here is a hatchet. anything else just isn't a sport.

I would use 64gr soft points, Vmax are a varmint load and will not be effective if you hit heavy bone. Personally I'd use a 44 mag with 250gr soft points.

45-70 would be pretty B/A, has the 450 Bushmaster kinda died? Thanks Rangers.

75gr hornaday jhp work good here in Oklahoma, but our wild hogs dont get as large as they do in GA, 375lbs; is a bout as big as ive seen or gotten here; nothing like that 'Hogzilla' photo ive seen. dont know if i would want to go out w/anything smaller than a .308 or a 30-06 in those woods- when considering that if wounded a hogs natural reaction is to attack. as a result i also always have a pistol, tomahawk and tench knife close at hand when hunting them w/ my .223 around here

I would not go with a .223 round for hogs at all; however, if you have no choice try the Barnes TSX. I would go with the heaviest grain bullet I could use depending on the rifle twist.

I would probrbly go with a .45-70 and then throw in a .44 mag on my hip. Or you could just bring a pack of dogs and a sharp knife

That's how the crazy Mexicans I went to HS with did it. I went with them once, saw a dog get ripped apart and Jugo stepped in and sliced the hog's throat with his Bowie knife. We then had to follow the pig (and dogs) thru the brush until it bled out.

Never went again without a heavy duty hand cannon or a 30.30 or better. I like to use a Remington 700 or my SOCOMII when I go hog hunting these days.

Hog Loads

Hogs are surprisingly easy to kill if you do your part. I have seen 400 lbs hogs go down DRT with a 62gr TSX hand load to the lungs/heart. That round went through the shield plate as well and lodge itself on the other side of the hog just under the skin. Sorry, I must have deleted the pic, he had some mean cutters. BTW shot was just under 100yds.

I am building a 6.8 spc AR for hunting now. Not because I feel the .223 is not enough for the hog but because I want a bit more range for deer season.

Personally if I did not reload I would not be shooting these hogs with anything but premium Barnes bullets that I loaded. I know plenty of guys that use surplus 62gr 5.56 penetrator ammo and take nothing but head shots.

I hunt hogs with cheap tequila, twinkies and astroglide.
