RASP Before Airborne?

Postby blueskiesalways » March 7th, 2011, 7:27 pm

Interesting development for my son. He was sent to RASP hold before Airborne. While he was unable to give me many details of the "test"program, apparently only those that make it through RASP will go to Airborne. I'm assuming ( ) this is to reduce training costs?...What then happens to those that have Airborne in their contract?

I'm not sure if this is becoming the "norm" so to speak, but I have heard of/seen some guys go through RIP (before it became RASP) before Airborne. These guys said that this was to cut down on guys who picked up Ranger contracts only to go through Airborne School and then drop RIP right after graduation. The only guys I've seen this done with were non-combat MOS's such as supply and logistics. Hope that helps!

It seems to be more and more common as the months go by for students to volunteer for Ranger training to attend airborne school, and once they obtain their wings they withdraw. This does nothing but suck up resources the students who wish to attend could really use, so it makes sense that even infantry candidates are now attending RASP first.

Based on what we've seen with those graduating OSUT with our 2nd son (currently in jump week) was those with Opt 40 going in went into the OSUT > ABN > RASP. Those picking up a RASP slot in OSUT were going to RASP first...

This is driven entirely by how much room they have in RASP hold and the time of the next class start date. From the perspective of one in Basic and Airborne, it will be very hit or miss.

To answer your question more direct, if you don't pass RASP you lose airborne even if it's in your contract, because the 75th pays for airborne training if your going to RASP. if you go worldwide (voluntarily withdraw, medical drop, whatever..) you wait in hold to be assigned to a leg (non-airborne unit) anywhere in the world, not airborne school. As far as if they are going to continue to bring in NAPs (non-airborne personel) I foresee them doing that more in the future. It saves money and punches quitters where it hurts.

My son is set to graduate from OSUT on August 5th. He has a contract 40 (OSUT/Airborne/RASP)and is concerned that with Airborne school in September he may not get into RASP this year and will have to wait until January 2012. Can he request RASP before Airborne?
