Re: Does anyone use heart rate monitors while working out?
I've never used one and I have 10 years on you. But if your doctor advises you to exercise at a certain level, it sure can't hurt to follow his advice. I'm sure I'll be using one at some time soon.

Using a heart rate monitor has nothing to do with age! Heart rate training is very focused and allows you to target your specific weakness or strength.

I use one everytime I work out. I'm an old fart, and I also use the data recording at Lance Armstrong's site:
http://www.livestrong.com
I keep track of calories in, calories out, cholesterol, fats, carbs, etc. This is a lot easier to do with a focused heart rate trainign program, as Silverback pointed out.

I've got a Garmin Forerunner 301 that I picked up referbed from http://www.megagps.com.
it may be more than you're looking for, and I use it to record/track speed, distance, the course, and HR. but I also cycle with it more then I run with it.

I have been using a Garmin Forerunner 305 for a while now and have yet to figure out everything it does. If you just need a basic HR monitor go check out the ones by Polar available at Walmart. I found one on sale there before I decided to upgrade to the Garmin.

You can get a polar heart rate monitor at sports authority for about 40 bucks. the monitor you wear around your chest will also sync with most decent treadmills, and display your hr on the treadmill. It is good to use a hr monitor and keep yourself in a zone between 60 and 80 percent of your max. Getting outside of that and you risk overtraining, or not doing enough.

I've been looking at one called the BodyBug, too. I just don't have another $300 sitting around at the moment.
