Registering with the ATF

Post by Parabellum »

I want to buy a 10 1/4 commando upper for my CAR-15. I know that this will classify my weapon as a "short barrelled rifle" and that needs a tax stamp. Does anyone know if I can convert my CAR into a short barrelled rifle or am I shit out of luck because I did not buy it that way. My weapon is a pre-ban assualt weapon. I have been reading my Federal Firearms Regualtion reference book but I can't find this info anywhere in there. Any help would be aprreciated.

Unless the laws have changed, you won't be able to alter your weapon. Looks like your gonna have to spend some of that hard earned pay. theres always the "don't ask, don't tell"

Any receiver that has had a rifle built on it CANNOT be made into a pistol or SBR.

Check this page out.

http://www.quarterbore.com/nfa/sbr-aow-pistol.html

However, it is legal to purchase a short barrel upper, and there are many places to do so from.

If you wanted one just to look at, and never put it on a rifle, have your dad buy one...that way the short upper is not near a full rifle and no one could construe that you would ever put the short rifle upper on a non-registered receiver.......

Basically what it says is that I can't put the upper on it until I register the reciever as a SBR. Once I do that then it is game on. That is what I got from it. I called COLT with the serial number and they said that it was pre-ban. If I can get the tax stamp then I assume that I am good.

I am guessing that you know you give up some of your 4th amendment rights with that tax stamp.

The laws are so fucked up. It is hard to explain. I got the goddamn reference guide and still have no idea about half of it.
