There's several factors at play here:

1. Do you mean "Blue Ray vs. standard-DVDs-on-an-upconvert-player" or "Blue Ray vs. HD-DVD-which-lost-the-format-war"? If it's the second one, the difference is/was fairly minimal.

2. Is that a 1080p or 720p TV? On 720p, the picture clarity between Blue Ray and upconverted-DVD is usually fairly minimal...Blue Ray gets down-converted while DVD gets upconverted.

3. How far away are you sitting from the TV? The eye can't make out as much detail if you're in a certain "middle" range. If you're closer than that, you'll see more detail, but set it next to a standard def TV and you'll be able to make out the whole picture from much further away (even if the small details are lost). I've seen several internet discussions on the topic, and some university even did a scientific study on it and came up with some formula (graph here). Unfortunately, they seem to have neglected the "very distant" effect, and the formula seems to fail at, say, 5x the "optimum" distance, in my opinion.

4. It's generally pointless to buy old movies, which were recorded on grainier film and in mono- or simple stereo-sound, in Blue Ray format.

5. If your home stereo sucks, you won't notice the improved audio, either. 24-bit 96kHz allows for crisper highs and less distortion on the lows (vice 16-bit 44.1kHz).

Wasn't a fan of the movie, but watch the new speed racer on blue ray. The colors were dynamic to the point that, though I have never done a mind altering drug, it was what my thought of an acid trip would look like during parts of the movie.
