Military Books

Post by chuck976 »

Rangers, I was looking for a new military book to read and thought you all might be able to give me some good suggestions. I've recently gotten very into reading military books (Lone Survivor, Six Minutes To Freedom, Black Hawk Down) and don't know which book to read next.

In the Company of Heroes. By Michael J. Durant (CW4, USA Ret.)

Black hawk helicopter master aviator Michael Durant's story of his experience in combat and confinement as a prisoner of war (POW) in Mogadishu, Somalia, is the centerpiece of the book.
Full Review

It is what I am currently reading you would probably enjoy it since you have already read Black Hawk Down.

"We were soldiers once...and young" is one of the finest books I've ever read, period. Highly recommend it as well.

"To fight with Intrepidity" is a great book on Ranger history, with a great deal of detail.

"Band of Brothers" book is even better than the movie, although the movie was great.

"With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa " another great book on WWII, but from a Marine's perspective in the Pacific.

"One Bullet Away" by Nathan Fick. He was a Platoon Leader for a Marine Force Recon platoon in Iraq. Much better than "Generation Kill".

"Platoon Leader" a great read about a cherry PL in Vietnam.

"Not a Good Day to Die" on Operation Anaconda in Afganistan

"Roberts Ridge" on the action at Takur Ghar during Anaconda

"The First Men In: US Paratroopers and the Fight to Save D-Day" pretty self explanatory.

"Spec Ops: Case Studies in Special Operations Warfare Theory and Practice"

"Special Operations and Strategy: From World War II to the War on Terrorism "

"SOG" and "Secret Commando's" both by John Plaster

"SOG Medic: Stories from Vietnam and Over the Fence "

There are any number of books on LRRPS/Rangers in Vietnam. Blood on the Risers and Linderer's books are a few I really like. These are, for the most part, great books that any aspiring Ranger would benefit from. These men set the standard for the Battalions and later the Regiment. Quite a few of these men formed the initial cadre.

Go to Amazon and put any of the above titles in and then near the middle of the page it suggests similar titles. I've found a lot of reading material this way.

Additionally, there are a couple of threads in this forum that discuss favorite books. Seek that out.

For a quick fix, this is a great blog that discusses a combat operation that helped to shape the Ranger Regiment as well as U.S. Special Operations. Click me

DOH!

Definitely add that one to the list! A fiction book that is only fiction because the names were changed.

Another book by a couple of members of this site: "The Battle of Mogadishu".

Coming up in LRS I was always told to read Andy McNabb's "Bravo-Two-Zero" or Chris Ryan's "The One That Got Away".
