Recommendation on long range FRS/GMRS radio

I have a pair of Cobra PR5000 (15 mile) radios that require replacing. Any recommendations on strong 2-way radios that will provide a solid 5 mile (or more) radius through trees and mountainous terrain appreciated.

Well, I'll respond to myself.

I've purchased a set of Midland 900 series FRS/GMRS radios. They are 5w radios and over flat terrain and water have the ability to reach 30 miles. In my mountainous terrain, I expect 2-3 miles range.

Additionally, a SAR friend is providing a pair of high powered Motorola UHF mil-spec radio's that should far exceed my range expectations, but I'll need to obtain a HAM license to operate them legally.

May be necroposting but if you want long range comms you have 2 choices

ham radio or a monthly bill with iridium

I went the ham radio route, currently got 4 radios. Only takes a little bit of time to study for the test and it's free... and the radios do ALOT more than anything you're used to.
