The Standard

Post by Slowpoke »

So, there I am at my first day of Physical Therapy after my knee surgery 60 days ago. The Therapist checks out my "range of motion" (not much), and gives me some excersizes to do at home to increase the amount I can bend my knee. Then it's off to their gym to do some muscle strengthening. He puts me on this thing that looks like a recumbent bike with a dash board....it's kind of a horizontal stair climber where you push straight out, sets the resistance, sets the timer for 10 mins., and says to keep it between 60 and 80 steps/min. No problems at 60,70, 80 so I just kick it up to about 95 and smoke this sucker....exceed the standard! Next, we go to the stationary bike, so I climb on, put my feet in the stirrups on the pedals, he sets the resistance and the timer for 10 mins and says to keep it between 60 and 80 rpm. I start right out at a pretty good clip and look at the tach.....45 rpm. Shit! So I kick it right up there and check the tach......55 rpm. Holy SHIT!!! Now I'm pedalling my ass off and holding 71 rpm, so I check the countdown timer and it's reading 9:20, 19, 18, 17. At about 6:10 I'm starting to puff and pant . At 5:20 my leg muscles are sceaming! At 4:45 I'm starting to think I HATE bikes. At 4:00 I'm starting to have my doubts about making it all the way!

THANK YOU LISA!

All I had to do was think about the way you've driven on under sooooo much adversity and I wasn't doing so bad. Without you, I probably wouldn't have made it.

 That's an awesome compliment, Ranger Slowpoke! Thank you! Actually, you Rangers, my better half included, set and exceed the standard. You set the example. You have and continue to motivate me!

I have no doubt you will kick a** in therapy, and I hope you have a speedy and uneventful recovery! 8)

I feel for you. Ive been going through surgeries and PT for the last 2 years. Im proud to hear you kicked the piss out of the bike its a B**ch. My guess is they didn't set your tension right. It makes the rpm's go up faster. My therapist has done it to me several times.

Good Luck Ranger Slowpoke to a fast and full recovery, my prayers are with you.

USMC Vet. Borebrush:

I am sure your comment was directed at Ranger Slowpoke, but I felt like responding.

Indeed, I yell at my injuries a lot :) Its a side effect of my attitude and getting pissed at parts giving out on me. Unfortunately for the pain some of my injuries are not muscle related so I can't benefit from NSAID"s (motrin, naprocin, etc...) because those help with muscular/swelling issues. I have a gnarly shoulder injury that includes nerve issues, degeneration in c2-c7, and more. No reason to list it all.

Suffice it to say surgery provided more pain/dmg than help because there not even really sure what's wrong.

PT is just to keep my range at max.

The above should give insight to my sympathizing with Ranger Slowpoke, I have been there for 2 years, and im still there.

You do have to push it at times to improve, but just be sure to not push to hard. You could end up with permanent unrepairable damage. Not where I wanted to be.

Ranger Slowpoke, like borebrush mentioned, don't give up. I am positive I don't have to say that to you, I have been reading your posts since 2003 or so, I feel fairly certain you will not. But encouragement can't hurt.

Feel free to PM me if you need to just shoot the shit with someone in your position.

Thanks for asking, dear friend. It's tried to kick my ass a couple of times now, but I've learned to sneak up on it when it's not looking and beat the shit out of it!

Another good question would be, how's your recovery going. I know that I said I would stop by while I was on leave, but I spent most of my time jumping out of my fourth point of contact trying to get shit done. I am going to do my best to link up with you and Dave when I get home the next time. Maybe we can have a get together at our compound and cook some dead animals or something. And if you need anything or just want to shoot the shit, you have my woman's number, she'd be happy to hear from you.

Way to hang in there Ranger Slowpoke.

If the pain happens to start getting to you... motrin and tylenol have a synergistic effect that can prove to be very beneficial.

Recovery is going pretty well for me right now, thank you for asking, Ranger Guru. Starting to get back on track after this last surgery. It would be great to get together with y'all, just let us know when. Thank you, and I need to catch up with your 6. I'll give her a call.
